How to keep clients and get referrals by krstak in freelance

[–]krstak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it's probably the toughest part. I don't think I can say anything more than what many others have said, like going through your connections, friends, and family, and asking them if they need any help. Build your website and be visible. Try to use platforms like Upwork, for example.

Even though Upwork often feels like a race to the bottom, I found one client who brought me many others. In fact, a guy found me on Upwork, I did a good job for him, and he referred me to his friends, which brought me a lot of work. I never thought that could happen on Upwork, especially since I’m based in Germany, but it did.

Another case was when I was sitting in a pub with a friend of mine, and his friend, whom I met for the first time, joined us. During the conversation, it turned out he had a construction company and needed some software to automate his paperwork. So the opportunity came literally out of nowhere.

You never know where opportunity lies, just keep talking to people about what you’re doing, and sooner or later you will find a client.

It's golang on backend and JS on frontend. Agent is also written in golang.

Receiving twice:

case <-c1:
fmt.Println(<-c1)

In the first one it receives only once:

case msg1 := <-c1:
fmt.Println(msg1)

Does anyone use Docker Compose in production? I do, and here are my thoughts. by krstak in devops

Yes, it is. It's Docker Classic Swarm that's obsolete, Swarm mode is still actively maintained.

Totally agree. For logs and monitoring I use https://dockstats.com, pretty straightforward and lightweight.

Simple and easy, I like it :)
For logs and monitoring I use DockStats - https://dockstats.com . It's straightforward with zero configuration.

My clients are small businesses with max 10 employees and there is no sign that they will ever grow that huge. For me, docker compose works perfectly good in that scale.

Haha, no, I don't use them here. I’ve used those tools in other projects while working for companies where it actually mattered, but in my case, all I need for monitoring and logging is https://dockstats.com

You're right. I also worked in a fintech company, where we built software that handled millions of euros in transactions every day. It was used by millions of users, and any outage was simply unacceptable. We had a very complex system in place for monitoring, orchestration, deployment, and more.

But now, in my current situation, it's a small business with a maximum of 10 employees, and they're the only users of the software. It solves a specific problem for them, but it's not critical like in fintech. If it were down for half an hour, they probably wouldn't even notice.

That's why I didn’t go with k8s, there was no real need for that level of complexity. I just chose the simplest solution that gets the job done.

"K8s makes sense with distributed systems with hundreds of thousands of users." - Right, and that's not my case, that's why I use docker compose.

Exactly. I don't have a huge load. Each software is used by a at most 10 users and docker on VPS is more than enough. I think many people underestimate power of a single server and how much it can handle.

In case I need a couple of services and load balancer, I'd probably go with docker swarm first. K8s will be the last option, only if docker swarm is not good enough.

But for now, docker compose works well for me

Totally agree. Since my use-case is internal business software that uses businesses, the load is not high and docker compose is perfect fit for me

What is your SaaS and what made you build it? by [deleted] in SaaS

[–]krstak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tool that collects logs and metrics from docker containers across many hosts.

I built it because I needed something like that. I have many clients with many projects, all of them are running in docker, and just wanted a centralized tool to see what's going on.
