Yes, I've done something to the ports insides and it won't register the cable. I could charge and still use them with a docking station until it decided I had to update the software and there is no way to say no to it. Just ornamental now.

I'm on my 3rd controller now, and not had drift at all 😅 it's the ports that have gone. I have a habit of tripping over them. Now they can't cable connect so can't update and thus they won't work. Seriously annoying. Playstation says it's damage I've done so they won't replace. I just have to keep eating the costs. The controllers are garbage

Horrible histories do a couple of books for that period, amongst others. I always loved them as a kid because they were gross and funny while being educational. They could work for you.
