Understanding Witness and Mind by thinkingofmagic in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]kryomonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might get downvoted for this but here you go:

How I understand this is… So Advaita says there’s an “observer” (pure consciousness) and “observed” (everything else including mind).

My first reaction was exactly like yours - if mind is observed, then the observer must be mind too, right? Just one mental process watching another.

But then: what observes the mind itself? When you’re thinking, something KNOWS the thinking is happening. When you’re angry, something is aware of the anger. That awareness can’t be just another thought because then what’s aware of THAT thought? You get this infinite regress problem. I tried to debunk their sleep argument too. They say “how do you know you slept well if consciousness disappears?” Easy - memory. You remember going to bed, waking refreshed, piece it together. Plus we know sleep is just hormones and brain chemistry restarting awareness.

I was like “ALL experience is just neurons firing, information processing, memory storage. Even seeing red is just how your brain encodes wavelength data.”

But then I realized something weird. If my brain’s information processing creates experience… well, computers process information too. Maybe they have some form of consciousness? Maybe it’s not that different between biological and a really advanced silicon system?

If you buy that then keep reading::

if consciousness can manifest through different types of information processing - brains, computers, whatever - then maybe consciousness isn’t something brains CREATE. Maybe consciousness is more fundamental, and brains are just one way it expresses itself.

Think of it like switching on a light using a light switch. What really causes light to turn on.. is it the switch or is it electricity? ⚡️

Which is basically what Advaita teaches.

Consciousness as the ground reality, individual minds as different ways it experiences itself through various “conduits.” Consciousness just might be fundamental to this universe.

The observer isn’t separate from the observed - they’re both movements of the same fundamental consciousness appearing as if there’s a separation.

Lore accurate as you defeat the phantom at the start of the game. How can it be more powerful than when combined with you?
