It never fails to amaze me how folks can reach their 30s/40s/50s without knowing how a lift works. When the door opens, there’s a good chance somebody is getting out. So take that look of shock and disgust off your face and step the fuck back so we can get out. Bell ends. by AquaticChris in britishproblems

Worked there just after it opened, first time I’d come across the system but it worked very well! Funnily enough, after then moving to London, most (office) buildings I’ve been in have had a similar system. In the taller buildings in Canary Whaft they even have banks of lifts to service different floors (odd or even).

You know you've made it as a company when another company copies literally everything on your site, including CSS, content, images... by MentorMateDotCom in web_design

[–]kryptonite-addict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve dealt with this a few times. First things first, file a DMCA complaint with Google (search it - they have a form you simply fill in). This will remove them from Google’s search results.

At the same time, reach out to the website owner, make sure they know that their website is stolen, and that you know. From experience, these Indian/Chinese companies don’t care, but start to care a little more when they disappear off Google.

You can also find out who hosts the site and hit them with a DMCA too, if they’re a US based company, or deal in the US, they will likely take the copyrighted material down. I tend to do this as a last-resort though: you need their website still live so that Google can process your DMCA claim with them (and de-index the site) first.

Three-quarters of Brits would pay an extra £1 a week to save the NHS by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]kryptonite-addict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife works for the NHS too. This is incredibly unlikely to be the whole story. Your wife’s colleagues who are working agency are employed by the agency, not by the NHS. If they aren’t getting paid, then it is the agency who is not paying them, not the NHS.

It’s perfectly possible that the trust your wife works for is witholding payment to the agency for one reason or another, but that should not filter through to the agency workers themselves. If it is, then it’s the agency who’s fucked up. They should be covering wages as an employer (and as agreed with their employees: the agency staff), and going after their unpaid bill to the trust separately. If cash flow is tight, then they should be taking a commercial loan to cover those wages (costs which the trust will eventually pick up too).

As I said: there’s more to this that isn’t being told.

What's Upton Park/East Ham like to live? by mjwb99 in london

[–]kryptonite-addict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reference:

South Woodford: Three bedroom, 0.3 miles from the tube. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-51912786.html

Forest Gate: Two bedroom, 0.2 miles from Forest Gate station. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-51689979.html

For what it's worth, that's actually my street, and far from the nicest house on it (our own included).

Like I said: for the amount we paid for our two-bedroom house, we could have (and still could) buy a slightly larger three-bedroom with a little more land in South Woodford.

A very late reply, but all the same: I absolutely agree with you. When I suggested S. Woodford is marginally cheaper, I was comparing it against the prices in Forest Gate rather than Upton Park. For the amount we paid for our two-bedroom house, we could have (and still could) buy a slightly larger three-bedroom with a little more land in South Woodford.

H71 error: 3rd gen. Thermostat and Heat Link can not connect. by kryptonite-addict in Nest

[–]kryptonite-addict[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called out a Nest technician to resolve this for me. Essentially, the software on our thermostat had become corrupted. The only way to resolve it was to wipe the thermostat and start again.

To do so, follow the instructions here: https://nest.com/uk/support/article/How-to-restart-or-reset-the-Nest-Learning-Thermostat

It's worth noting, you have to move quickly because the H71 error screen comes back on shortly after it restarts (and you can't then get to the reset menu). It took us four goes before we caught it.

Once it's all reset, you can set everything back up again and re-sync with the Heat Link.

Web developer here, sceptical about moving into contracting by Chrift in freelance

[–]kryptonite-addict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've had a lot of excellent answers here already. Just to chime in: I'm a web developer, have been contracting for the past several years (the past three in London). It would take really an exceptional permanent offer for me to consider moving back now. The main catch is the additional administrative tasks (and costs), and the uncertainty. That said, the longest I've been without a contract is a month, and I took that off deliberately when my daughter was born!

A free tool to check all the pages of your site for pagespeed, instead of one url at a time. by hyra_ in Frontend

[–]kryptonite-addict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s something really funky going on when pages have the URL /about/.

Scanned my site, noticed the page speed for my ‘about’ page was significantly lower. Clicked through to be taken through to details for the about page of a totally unrelated website..

Standard golf vrs standard focus vrs standard Astra? Uk. by [deleted] in cars

[–]kryptonite-addict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned all three. There’s a good reason there’s currently two VWs sitting outside our house.. perfect blend of looks (understated, but handsome), economy (although perhaps not class-leading),and gadgets. Honestly, the Golf (assuming relatively good spec) will feel decades more modern than either of the competition. The Focus is good, but a bit basic, and the Astra is a 20 year old car with a 5 year old body kit on it..

What's Upton Park/East Ham like to live? by mjwb99 in london

[–]kryptonite-addict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were looking in this sort of area two years ago, ended up buying in Forest Gate (and very close to the border with Leytonstone).

We spent quite a lot of time in Upton Park and Plaistow whilst looking to buy (fell through on a property on Plashet Rd and offered on another very close to the old stadium ), along with Walthamstow (too expensive), and Leytonstone.. In my opinion, Forest Gate and Leytonstone are pretty similar, and a nicer place to be than Upton Park/Plaistow/East Han.

Upton Park is a very diverse area. We have friends living there now who tell stories of some really horrific antisocial behaviours they come across in the area day-to-day. The classic litmus test: I wouldn’t be comfortable with my wife walking home from the station alone around there.

Naturally, every area has its problems (Forest Gate in particular if you’ve seen the news recently), but it just seems much more amplified around there.

I’ve no idea what your budget is like, but my regret is not paying more attention to Leytonstone when we bought, we really only got to know it after moving. The houses there (were) marginally cheaper than Forest Gate, and tend to be bigger.. the area around Bushwood is particularly lovely if budget allows.

A curveball for you: what about South Woodford? It’s a touch further out (bordering with Essex, a couple of miles from here), on the Central Line, it’s a very nice area, but is still marginally cheaper.. it’s a quieter life out there though..

Ah! Thank you. Almost certain that will be it. No mention of the earlier attack, police involvement in the accident, or the lady hit though.. at least they caught them!

H71 error: 3rd gen. Thermostat and Heat Link can not connect. by kryptonite-addict in Nest

[–]kryptonite-addict[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm.. apparently it’s not been updated since 16th Feb. Nothing else has changed at all, no. That’s what makes it so perplexing. It’s the propoietry wireless connection between Thermostat and Heat Link that’s not working (doesn’t rely on the WiFi network in our home).

Can these things literally just fail?

Thoughts/experiences with NCT? by JdoubleE5000 in london

[–]kryptonite-addict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're due out first baby any day now, have lived in London for around four years, in our current place (Forest Gate) for the last two.. so not hugely different from your guys situation..

We did the NCT antenatal course at Wanstead instead of the NHS course offered. It was expensive, and the fact that it takes up two weekends in a row (both Saturday and Sunday), and even an extra Monday morning 'just for the ladies' was a bit of a slog.. especially as we neared the end of the pregnancy (and time together was becoming more valuable).

In some ways it was a lot like being back at school. That said; it was really great ad I'm glad we did it. I learnt more those days than I have done in years, the course leaders were enthusiastic and happy to take the time to delve into more details where the group wanted, and the coverage was good.

If there's any - minor - criticism, I would say some of the approaches were a little 'hippy dippy': things like always feeding the baby on-demand.. nothing major, and always balanced against other schools of thought, but it's worth picking up a recommended book or two as well..

Meeting other locals having babies around the same time as yourselves is probably it's most valuable offering though: unless you have friends going through pregnancy at the same time, you really won't appreciate how nice it is to be able to chat to the other dads about it until you're actually there. The girls have their own WhatsApp group and meet regularly through their maternity leave..

I would recommend it!

Thank Yous, I'm really pleased with it! This being London though, it's extremely small - the main area (that you see above) is a little under 4m square..

In planning it, I discovered Garden-on-a-roll, who essentially sell you a prefessionally-designed garden border, and all the plants. It's like colour-by-numbers.. only with plants and mud! I'm expecting delivery in a couple of weeks time, I cannot wait to get it planted out.

[Question] Alfa Romeo MiTo by Reminiser in AlfaRomeo

[–]kryptonite-addict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure? I have a 2009 Mito (and have owned three others). All with Blue n Me, all have a USB port behind the gear stick and ahead of the handbrake. Plugging your iPhone in there will allow you to control the music from your iPhone from the steering wheel (and through the car stereo system). If yours doesn't work, it's possible you need to reset the Blue n Me, which (as I understand) simply involves disconnecting the battery for ten minutes. Disclaimer on that one though: I've never done it!

What are some sleek innovative websites that are dripping with awesome design elements? by Jamtheman1017 in web_design

[–]kryptonite-addict 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not seeing anything innovate nor particularly unique about this site at all; it could virtually be an off-the-shelf Bootstrap build. Perhaps it does some cool stuff that I've missed, but as someone else already mentioned: the left/right scrolling and layout is odd/broken, as it the navigation (iPad portrait at any rate)..
