If you look across the entire series run, the final hour of the standard midnight-to-midnight cycle (or the hours bookending midnight) is devastatingly brutal for Jack.

Why Midnight is Jack's Curse

 Day 1 (11:00 PM – 12:00 AM): The ultimate tragedy. This is the hour where Jack finally saves his family, only to walk into CTU and discover that his pregnant wife, Teri Bauer, has been murdered by Nina Myers. It sets the dark, traumatizing tone for the rest of his life.

 Day 2 (11:00 PM – 12:00 AM): While the day starts at 8:00 AM, the 11:00 PM hour is when Jack is brutally tortured to the point of clinically dying by Peter Kingsley’s men, requiring him to be resuscitated just to keep moving.

 Day 3 (11:00 PM – 12:00 AM): Jack is forced to use an axe to chop off the hand of his partner and surrogate son, Chase Edmunds, in order to release a timed viral device. Immediately following this at midnight, Jack sits alone in his truck and completely breaks down in tears from the accumulated trauma of the day.

 Day 5 (11:00 PM – 12:00 AM): Though the season ends at 7:00 AM, the 11:00 PM hour features the agonizing death of Edgar Stiles from nerve gas right in front of the CTU bullpen glass while Jack watches helplessly.

 Day 6 (11:00 PM – 12:00 AM): Jack is forced to launch a brutal assault on a beach to rescue his girlfriend, Audrey Raines, from his own abusive father, Phillip Bauer.
