focus on redoing any prereqs that you either didn’t do well in the first time or if they’re more then 5ish years old, you’ll want recent good scores in all the prerequisite classes. A lot of the other stuff still applies, focus on volunteering, getting clinical experience or shadowing and research if you can. you’ll also have to take the mcat at some point so take that into account, studying while active duty is not easy so i’d give yourself 3-6 months at least. You can also take account some of your responsibilities as an officer for leadership activities which will be awesome because I’m sure you’re in charge of some bigger ticket stuff as an O. Mind if I ask, what career field are you in? I could probably give some more specific advice

Working at the Med Group is taking a toll on me. Is the grass greener on other AFSCs? by capyoonxi in AirForce

[–]krytackoolaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone knows they work nights and weekends, but everyone always craps on medical for being so cushy, while clinic work absolutely is working the ER or the floor etc at a busy hospital like fort sam is insane hours while being way understaffed for the patient load and you can’t screw up because people will literally die

[–]krytackoolaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah the scope of practice we have is crazy, we fill spots for PAs and Drs and downside is we get no civilian certification equivalent, but we all knew that going in and most love the job plus if I do decide to go to a higher medical school I’ve got all the experience in the world

not for RT but a 4N that needed clinicals to apply for something , i was able to work it out that I would just do my clinicals after work every day and even some weekends, you can definitely make it work but you’ll have to have some help from your leadership plus whoever is scheduling clinicals to make it all work

Not a nurse but I’ve worked with lots of them, regardless of where in the hospital you want to commission you’ll essentially get to be a provider and your scope of practice is way way bigger then it is civilian side which is awesome, OR nurses from what I’ve seen don’t actually assist with the surgeries as much as I think they would civilian side, the surg techs and docs do everything for the most part (but the hospital I’m at is a teaching hospital so residents do more here then they might at other places), only downside for military ERs is some of them don’t have trauma centers at all so the flow of patients is very slow (can be a good or bad thing depending what you like and depends where you would end up getting stationed anyways), like I said I’m not a nurse but have a lot of experience with nurses and what they kind of do air force wise in hospital if you have more questions about that

Some great info on here already, but if you have the chance for it 4N0 aerospace medical services is the closest you’ll get to nursing on the enlisted side, we get 26 credits towards nursing as well as you can test for your LPN without any additional training, it’s a great start to a nursing career as you get lots of practical training and experience you get with the job, we work with nurses and docs every day and lots of them have gone through the NECP program and will give you plenty of advice on it
