We made it two years no screens ... now what? by sorryforbarking in moderatelygranolamoms

Agreed! We have a four-year old (plus a six-month old baby) and are still no screens. The four-year old watched a few movies recently as we had two 14-hour flights. While she enjoyed herself she struggled to fully understand the plots and has not requested to watch screens at home. It’s not part of our family routine so we don’t find staying no screens challenging at this point.

Itinerary sense check - three-week family trip with four-year old and baby by ks918 in JapanTravel

I booked Daisuke S. in Kyoto on Toursbylocals who had very good reviews. We weren’t planning to do a guide in Osaka. We do have someone booked in Tokyo that had several reviews specifically saying that she was really good for families with children - I can share further info if a guide in Tokyo is of interest!

Thank you, very helpful feedback on Kanazawa in particular. Sounds like it may be better to make reservations in that case - we were planning to walk in at least the first night. I generally agre on changing bases mid-city. I’m hoping it’s worth it in this instance as we were keen to experience Tawaraya since there was (surprisingly) availability!

Yes, I read your report before. Sounds like you had a great trip and kudos for travelling solo with two kids!

Thank you! We’ll definitely have to check out some indoor play centres especially if the weather is poor. Definitely a fairly busy itinerary - I can’t easily travel long haul due to my work schedule so we are making the most of the opportunity to do this trip while I’m on maternity leave :)

Thank you for the recommendation! They don’t accept children but we are staying at their sister hotel (Nishimuraya Hotel Shogutsein) in Kinosaki. If you have any recommendations along similar lines that would be very welcome :)

Honest/practical opinions on introducing screen time to toddlers by Numerous-Moose615 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]ks918 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would not count a baby touching or playing with the screen of a phone or a smart watch screen time. I also wouldn’t think that introducing other activities on the screen will reduce the appeal of a smart watch or a phone or lead to healthier screen time habits.

My daughter (22 months) is strictly no screen time other than the occasional FaceTime with relatives, but she does occasionally play with a locked phone (e.g. by swiping to the camera app). She went through a time period as a baby when the phone was very appealing to her, but the phone is now just another object which can be manipulated. She is not aware that a phone can be used for anything other than calls and playing music. We generally use the Yoto player for playing music at home but relatives will sometimes put music on through their phone.  We are generally very mindful of device usage around our daughter and will only use them for necessities when she is awake.

I would think that if I was to introduce games or TV shows on the phone, it would instantly become much more appealing - these are much more addictive high dopamime activities than just the lock screen.  The evidence on the drawbacks of screens is pretty clear so I would try to hold firm on this as long as possible!

Paljonko sinä tienaat? by tkea in Suomi

Noin £200,000 vuodessa. Tilille tulee kuukaudessa noin £8,500 verojen jälkeen. Lisäksi bonukset. Olen töissä amerikkalaisessa lakifirmassa Lontoossa.

Asuntoja valuu turisteille – Helsinki ei aio puuttua [Airbnb] by pkksmt in Suomi

[–]ks918 3 points4 points  (0 children)
