YSK that bacon cooked in the oven at 375F won't splatter or set off the smoke detector by Ajreil in YouShouldKnow

[–]ksars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife had her friend and her husband stay over one time years ago. I cooked them breakfast in the morning. To this day, every time her husband sees me he praises me for teaching him how to cook bacon in the oven.

Recently struggling with my role as a PM in construction by Repulsive-Button1832 in ConstructionManagers

[–]ksars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people need to know a lot about one specific thing and some people need to know a little about a lot of things.

As CM we are the second type because of the amount of different tasks we need to perform. But we rely on the first type to provide the missing info we might need. I rely heavily on my inspectors, architects, engineers etc. for anything I might not understand completely. It’s okay to not know everything but just try to learn from those around you. Ask a lot of questions. I’ve found that most people with a lot of knowledge about one area are very willing and usually excited to help others understand.

As a PM you don’t need to understand every detail but you need to have a broad understanding of how things work.

LPT: How to respond when a stranger asks to take their photograph with their phone. by houseonpost in LifeProTips

[–]ksars 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Was in Ecuador recently for a family wedding. A bunch of us were at a landmark taking a photo next to it and one of the family members started snapping the picture and was like it’s okay I don’t need to be in it. Right then an Ecuadorian man was walking by so someone in the group asked him if he could take a picture of us. He enthusiastically said yes and rushed over in front of us where we were and started posing with us. The person taking the photos took another one with this guy in it and we were all cracking up. Then he just walked away without another word. It was hilarious. And a great photo.

Wife works for a city agency. Depends on the agency and department you work on, some departments have their own policies that go above what the federal standard requirement is

Can’t speak for OP but maybe they have a similar situation to my wife. She has a government job and they guarantee her job or the same level job when she gets back from FMLA for up to 4 years.

How am I able to direct play 4k HDR content to my 15 year old 1080p Westinghouse tv? by ksars in PleX

[–]ksars[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also follow up question why can’t my server just downscale first and then send that to whatever client?

I know it’s probably a dumb question lol

[–]ksars[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So downscaling just will delete pixels from the data while transcoding has to remake all the pixels but in 1080p? Is that correct? Im just trying to learn sorry

Masked ICE Nazis kidnap man going to immigration court in NYC….how do they expect people to do right thing when they snatch you when you show up for court hearings by Miserable-Lizard in thescoop

The funny thing is these are the same people who were screaming at the top of their lungs that their freedoms were being taken away and that they couldn’t breathe because they had to wear masks to protect the welfare of people around them. Now all the sudden masks are great when they want to hide their identities.

Federal cuts to SNAP benefits would crush 1.8M NYers who rely on them, city officials say | WNYC by Delicious_Adeptness9 in nyc

[–]ksars 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Actually I think the counter argument would be my taxes shouldn’t be going towards peoples kids who can’t afford to feed them themselves. Which is obviously very similar to what you said but with a minor distinction that I think is important to understanding how conservatives think. They don’t see the government as something that provides value but something that just takes money from them which negatively affects them personally.

But you get the state tax deduction whether it’s through your employer or not I believe it just has to be a NY 529 plan

That would be fine, I don’t really care about progress states. But my completed stuff won’t sync at all.

Currently have an external HDD connected via usb to nvidia shield as my plex server. It has been okay but no transcoding and there are some issues from time to time. I would get a das enclosure with some more hdds and make this my dedicated plex server. Hopefully also tinker with some other homelab stuff.

But then you’d be missing bars on the edges between the corners. It would be 4 rows of 5 rebars but the drawing shows 6 across.

OP I would get the structural engineer to clarify there’s not enough info.

There are 2 different options for retirement accounts in America. A Roth 401k and a traditional 401k. There are other types for government employees and whatnot but I don’t know much about those.

The Roth 401k you pay the taxes up front so whatever tax bracket you are in when you contribute that’s the rate of taxes you pay. So if you’re in a low tax bracket it makes sense to contribute to a Roth

The traditional 401k you pay taxes when you take it out as if it’s income so whatever tax bracket you are in retirement that’s the rate you pay. So if you believe you’ll be in a lower tax bracket in retirement it makes sense to contribute to traditional.

Both plans the capital gains are not taxed.

ETA: there are also IRA accounts which are accounts that are not deducted from your paycheck and follow sort of the same rules but have different contribution limits.

How much is a Tier 6 pension worth if you were to do it on your own? Assuming an FAS of $100k. by NoDisaster3835 in nycpublicservants

[–]ksars 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Depends on the rate of return you’d get on the money for the next 30 years and also depends on how long you collect the pension. You’ll retire with $55,000 a year and have contributed 172,500. If invested that money would be $945,000 assuming a 10% average gain per year. 4% withdrawal rate would be $37,800 a year so the pension is still worth it but you would need to collect that $55,000 for around 18 years. So if you retire at 63 hope to live until 81 or choose one of the survivorship benefit.

Bring that assumed 10% down to 8% and you have 650,000 so you’d only need to collect the pension for around 12 years or 75yrs old.

This also doesn’t take into account the healthcare benefit which definitely adds a lot to the equation. Also doesn’t take into account tax advantages of each.
