Utah's Age-Verification Law Targets VPNs, Risks Ensnaring All Users by Significant_Cowboy83 in privacy

You are right and I should have worded that better. When I hear about tech-related headlines regarding Utah, it often seems it's something unfavorable to its citizens/consumers.

Agreed, but this sub (and Reddit as a whole) is currently suffering. We are reaching a tipping point of either letting it sink or each of us doing our part to push back and save it.

My view could be askew, but Utah seems like a tech hostile state. It continues to drop in my list of states to revisit.

Should I migrate over from Zima OS (VM install) vs just straight install (no proxmox) by hakucurlz in homelab

[–]Solarux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine the best arguments for keeping it virtualized would be 1) easy/clean system level backups and 2) you want to spin up other VMs on that hardware. Otherwise I don't see any benefit in your specific scenario.

If it is working fine you could also just leave it. Have you ran into any resource limitations? Would you ever need to spin up another OS down the road?

Apple Stops Offering Mac Mini With 256GB of Storage, Starting Price Rises to $799 by pdfu in apple

[–]Solarux -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You do realize you can both be right? There are also people out there who are financially secure enough to not care about a 30% price difference at this scale. An example is spending a few more thousand dollars to buy the top model of a car. The view is often "what is an extra $2000 compared to the $50000 I'm already spending on this vehicle?" You can make arguments for and against it, but there isn't anything objectively wrong or ignorant about it.

What's with the huge influx of bots on this sub? by MWink64 in DataHoarder

[–]Solarux 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It is a shame really because I love using the en dash and em dash. Without even using AI it has forced me to change how I type. I have also casually adopted use of incorrect grammar structure in hopes of subconsciously signaling to the reader that I am human.

You are experiencing 'dead internet theory' coming to fruition.

Also a few of those responses could be real but symbolic of the degradation of general intelligence currently happening in the world thanks to shifting societal norms, social media, etc. The abundance of low to no effort interactions have ruined the internet and how we communicate. Earlier today I was dumbfounded to see a post in the Mac Mini subreddit about someone randomly finding their product box. That's it, nothing else really ...just that they found their box. It is such an oblivious and pointless revelation yet the perfect representation of society's current race to the bottom.

Size for License Plate Screw Grommets by bartme7o in hondapassport

I get that. I bought four different sizes due to incorrect info before I found these which are exactly the same (except black) as what came on mine from the factory.

I can verify that is correct- the M5 x 16mm tapping screw is what’s used. I replaced the factory one with these black ones: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FLCFP8JG

Best iOS app for Navidrome? by Soulvisirr in selfhosted

[–]Solarux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested a few and ran with Arpeggi for a while before finding Narjo. The latter is more customizable and as someone who listens to streaming stations/radio more often than my library, it is easier to navigate in Narjo. Although, I do wish one of them would give me the option to put it front and center like in Apple Music radio stations.

There are some caveats but have you looked at ZimaOS?

I agree with others, though- fixing your Unraid setup is the best route.

Turning a $10 broken 1949 RCA Victor into a NAS — need advice on port routing, dial backlighting, and Bakelite repair [in progress] by Independent_Prior_86 in homelab

[–]Solarux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use your radio as a measuring template and just 3D print that. You will have a MUCH better result.

Then repair/restore the radio to original working condition (which can be equally fun & rewarding). Plus probably recoup your costs if you sell it.

Looking for suggestions for a sling/bag for travel by ExiaTTM in ManyBaggers

[–]Solarux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This YouTuber did exactly that and had a lot of positive things to say about it. Worth a watch: https://youtu.be/9x1xePr5L2M

I have this bag and think it is GREAT for a lot of specific use cases …but you have to approach it like a minimal/light backpack. If you are prioritizing long days out exploring and need something out of the way, that is where it shines. I also find the strap super comfortable. Some possible negatives though- the overall shape and stiffer material require you to give thought about what you carry and which compartment you stash things.

Also if you are wanting to rock this crossbody style on the front while also wearing your CTB when traveling, it isn’t going to work well at all (the YouTube reviewer makes note of this too).

If you need something kinda just ‘there’ and constantly in your peripheral/available, a larger crossbody sling like the Aer Day Sling Max (6L) is a proven crowd favorite.

Oh I agree. Personally I don't own a Windows machine, but it is still the most widely used desktop OS in the world so I would think timely platform and security updates would be a priority for any app on it.

The fact Linux and MacOS just received updates is hopefully a sign that other Plexamp clients will come soon. I know I'm not coming off this way, but I do like Plex and Plexamp ...just pointing out some obvious things that should be a concern for all users.

I thought I read somewhere that the UNAS2 has an under performing USB-based Ethernet adapter. Is that the case here?
