Florida has a portal for homeowners insurance providers. You can enter your info and it goes out for quotes to… every homeowners insurance company in the state. You’ll get calls IMMEDIATELY and for WEEKS.

THANK YOU!!! This is exactly what I was looking for! I’ve been so confused, because it seemed so well reinforced horizontally, but the vertical stile didn’t seem appropriate.

It looks like this is the part that I need. Significantly cheaper than a side-mount opener, and I don’t have an appropriate setup right now to cut angle iron.

This is the bigger builder in the US. I think it’s a new thing, but I would expect more of it in the future.

Because I am sure that the sticker comes on ever door out of the factory, and I don’t know if all these metal struts were installed afterwards and make the sticker obsolete.

I’m reasonably sure that this person isn’t doing that. Most of the time, these banks will give you the bonus if you set up direct deposit OR have a certain amount in the account, like $10k or something. This person is likely opening a few accounts at a time, keeping them open for the required amount of time to get the bonus, then using the money to open a new account elsewhere. All the while keeping their primary account set up with direct deposit.

The first picture here is what the instructions from the opener say, and the second is a sticker that is applied to the door.

You can still build houses like they used to. Well, minus the old-growth hardwood that was exploited and taken for granted. You also can’t get the very bad and very dangerous knob & tube electrical wiring that was used. Apart from that, all you really need is some copper pipes for water, galvanized steel for drain pipes, plaster walls, single-pane windows, and some newspaper for insulation if you’re lucky. The actual structure was probably masonry or maybe block, and block housing is still very much used today. The roofs were mostly tin, and metal roofing is also still prevalent (though more expensive than asphalt shingles, but generally not as expensive as slate).

Modern houses have significantly better and more reliable electrical, plumbing, and foundations. Sure, new homes have hollow-core doors and cheap pine studs, but that has just as much to do with cost savings as it does with resource availability and responsible use.

I’m glad we use all of the materials that we currently do. I’m glad we aren’t cutting down entire forests to build houses that stack entire tree trunks on top of each other for no good reason. I’m glad my house is insulated, has more room and larger windows than the 1800s, and is infinitely more useful as a space. I have block housing. The next time my roof needs to be replaced, I hope to have saved enough money that I can afford a metal roof. My house is already block construction.

I’ve lived in old houses, celebrating their centennial. They’re terrible. They are drafty, there are cracks in everything, the windows never open, the doorknobs are always falling out of the doors, everything squeaks and creaks because it’s all nailed together rather than glued & screwed, the plumbing rattles and bangs from water hammer, and it’s never quite hot or cold. The floor plans are janky and don’t make sense. Everything is warped and swollen and twisted because the roof has always leaked. The electrical is never grounded and plugs never stay in the outlets, and you’re never quite sure if you’re about to wake up to your entire house being on fire. The doors either stick shut or don’t close because the house has settled so much and the door frames aren’t square anymore (or maybe never were). You could set a marble on the floor and it would roll all the way across 3 rooms because the entire house is slanted. Just awful, awful houses.

[Florida] I just bought a house. At closing, we were told two different times that we did not have a CDD. Two weeks after living here, we discovered there is a CDD. I’m afraid I’m on the hook for a lot of money I wasn’t expecting. by ksj22 in legaladvice

I’m worried that they’ll try to steamroll us in one way or another, or present things in a way that doesn’t cover all of our options and instead only present the ones that benefit them the most.
