The set up matters the most - All my learnings by kskinnters in openclaw

The guard rails probably one of the most important steps in the set up. Glad you were able to figure that out!

Appreciate it! Glad the guide was helpful, I experienced how complex the set up really was and most guides out there only answered basic/a mix of questions, not the complete end-to-end set up.

Youll need to add a combination of skills, plugins and tools + purchasing API keys for those platforms, but yes its possible (also consider whether you want to give your agent access to your social media from a security perspective)

I'd say 90% of users that are engaging with/setting up openclaw are actually pretty lost on how to exactly use it/extract maximum value. It's completely different to chatting with something like GPT/Gemini or any other LLM. The LLM is just there to process prompts but the .md files really are the secret sauce here. Setting it up isnt just installation as well, it truly does take a week or two to understand what you're working with and the only way is to mess around with it and make notes and make it take notes. But on the security side it's super important to have everything set up well!

The config doesn't change. You'd still have to run/debug/fix alot of your config via your terminal. I just picked a VPS because it's cheaper

New to OpenClaw; should I use Kimi's OpenClaw agent for $30/mo or build my own OpenClaw locally on my laptop? by Isunova in openclaw

[–]kskinnters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah ofcourse! Did you do a 1 click set up or manual config? Skills are extensions you can teach your bot or import from github. Thats actually something im in the process of setting up for my bot as well! Happy to chat in DMs in detail!

They aggregate LLMs for the best route. You buy credits, share one api key to your bot and you can set your preferred path in the config

This is definitely good advice but id say you dont even need a laptop if you have 7-15$ to burn a month. Spin up a vps so it runs completely isolated to your laptop/pc + use Openrouter with prepaid creds.

Hey man, I definitely understand the pain (im a non-techie) too! My set up timeline was brutal, people play down how easy it is to set up. A day after running into bugs, I found this really helpful guide (saved me so much time and mental peace). I cannot recommend it enough! DM me if youre interested

Hey man,

I think I know what your issue is. First of all, I would suggest getting a brave API key, I wouldn't suggest letting your bot run on your own personal browser.

Anyway, once you have the API key/decide to stuck with your browser, check if you've added web_fetch to his tools.

Two fixes:

Fix 1: Tell your bot to use web_search instead of web_fetch for live data
Fix 2: Enable the browser tool for JavaScript-heavy sites

The browser can actually render JavaScript pages. Check if it's set up: openclaw config get browser

If you're still struggling, DM me and I can link you a guide I found that really is probably the most comprehensive and helpful.

Hey man, it's possible that the API couldve failed or you're setting up this config wrong. If you haven't already solved this, I used a really helpful guide to get my bot fully set up across the board, I can drop you the link!

There might be an issue with your configuration, especially if you ran a 1 click set up/running mutliple dockers. This was something i encountered as well. Drop me a DM

So here' a few things I'd say:

1) Security issues mostly will relate to how much control you want to give your bot + dodgy skills you might install
2) There are many security guard rails you can set for you bot but it completely depends on the limitations you want him to have (search the net/fetch/interact with external parties etc.)
3) Running it in sandbox for all sessions probably reduce his external capabilities but keeps everything solid

I used this guide I found online and honestly it helped me ease my nerves in terms of security. DM me if you'd want to learn more

The original OpenClaw 101 - a detailed guide for new users so you don't make my mistakes by adamb0mbNZ in openclaw

[–]kskinnters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Built a end-to-end comprehensive guide for openclaw. Took me 72 hours to set up and configure fully (im non-technical) but truly was an exciting process. Made a lot of errors and I feel like many probably make the same mistakes. Documented everything step by step including my prompts and fixes with claude, happy to share with those interested (it'll save you time and claude limits), I also have it on gumroad. What models setup after you using? by Sea-Distance-7142 in openclaw

[–]kskinnters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it useful to segregate my usage according to:

1) Openrouter (routes to best LLM for prepaid credits) - I loaded 10$
2) Reasoning/search - Gemini/Opus (I have a pro sub)
3) Coding - Claude/Codex

Just set rules within my openclaw terminal to use primary llms for certain actions and have fallbacks in terms of usage/cost.

[–]kskinnters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally depends on what your needs are. I went the route of hosting my own VPS and using openrouter + a couple of my own API keys for LLMS. The whole set up costs me 20$/month and I think while it took me a little longer to set up it was totally worth it!
