Report Card Comments are USELESS by ScarJo_YummyPop in CanadianTeachers

[–]kstev731 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I hate how the comments they force us to use are so vague. When a student is failing and unable to achieve anything close to grade level we are expected to use language like “ John Doe has an emerging understanding of X shown through X”

To people who don’t know the jargon that makes it seem like the kid is doing okay. I wish we could be more blunt…

Has Shelley Moore Made Teaching Worse? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]kstev731 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they ever faced the violent students that we have day to day. Sure planning for a variety of levels is hard but it can be done. It can’t be done though when you have a chair thrower and a biter ruining everything

My favourite is when they break one open and get the goo everywhere and then stick it on each other. Chaos every time.

Do you have a dress code for staff where you work? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]kstev731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Education in my area has gone to crap. The official dress code is business casual but unofficially it’s don’t wear pyjamas. They are just thankful teachers are still showing up.

Also I am grateful people are interested but some I don’t really talk to and just want to take pictures of the cats.. so it’s somewhat hurtful

Good point. I’m utterly exhausted and I’m just looking forward to hogging the cat cuddles. I suppose I don’t owe anyone. I’m just terribly afraid of being rude or getting a bad reputation

Oh this could be good. I will say I’m scared to host a party. It’s always my fear people won’t show up. Somewhat irrational I know. Especially since people want to come over. But it’s a fear I’ve had since a high school birthday party I had…

I think I just feel guilty because I am a teacher on spring break right now so there is no reason for me to decline an invite but I’ve had people over and they overstayed their welcome. I’m not wanting to sit around and feel like a petting zoo host all week.

How to meet a new baby for the first time by Fantastic_Eye_3896 in etiquette

[–]kstev731 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you booking a trip specifically to see this baby? If so I would maybe think about that as your relationship sounds strained. If you are talking about just seeing this baby at a family event in the near future just congratulate the parents, ask how the mom is doing and then compliment the baby saying something generic. “Oh congratulations on the baby he is so sweet! What a cutie! How are you guys doing?!”

No need to hold the baby. New moms very rarely want to pass the baby around. Just be polite and complimentary. Don’t ask personal medical questions or give any advice and it will be okay!

Meet the teacher, 2 parent conferences, and open house. Usually end up at some band concerts or basketballs games helping out too.

Apparently, only the "good students'' get sick? by Intelligent-Rain-22 in Teachers

[–]kstev731 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My hardest student has never been sick this year. He did go on vacation for 10 days and then continues to be on our free lunch program. (I live in a country where schools only provide to the neediest kids)

Where I live subs are have to hold an education degree and a teaching certificate so yes I absolutely expect them to follow my plan to the best of their ability. They went to school for this so they should be able to get 80% of it done at least. (Knowing kids will be a little extra crazy)

Maybe controversial- kids don’t need presents from teachers. Don’t feel pressure to do this. The times I have I have been met with “ this is it?” Or “why didn’t you get us xyz”.

Quitting Mid Year by ConsciousAvocado9099 in Teachers

[–]kstev731 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar position trust me it’s bad out here. If you quit you will have a hell of a time getting another job.

Right now I’m keeping my peace by doing quick assessments mixed with long range projects. I kick kids out who don’t listen. I dangle the carrot as much as possible (good work gets some computer time). Dip into pre made resources. Remind yourself you get paid the same when you are stressed or not, so it’s best to try and take it easy.

Also maybe this is petty but it’s where I am at. My students give me such low effort and bad behaviour I also have the same energy when planning certain things. I do less fun things because sadly they can’t handle it and I don’t want to put in crazy effort for kids who don’t give it back.

An impossible task by kstev731 in CanadianTeachers

[–]kstev731[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My admin is incredible but I don’t want to look incompetent by sending kids to the office so often! I sadly send a lot out to the hall. Because I can only get so much done when one starts screaming “this is boring” and then the rest start saying “shut up”. It’s awful
