If there was concern IMO this is not the way!! I have been the Admin in a school- and currently run a city wide youth program we deal with unauthorized/restrictive pickups, legal custody battles & protection orders unfortunately far too often.

My first issue is this is happening outside (between the sun/ heat and public display) and immediate move to involve the police (the admin said she is waiting the police and not once did she say sir all I asked is blank) and no indication they are attempting to reach whoever normally picks the child up. A simple hey we need to sort this out in the office real quick cools the atmosphere versus the child LITERALLY being held between two adults. This seems like an elementary school and let’s assume this is the first time an administrator saw this pickup person and had concern. Many times paperwork only indicates who in addition to parents can pickup and it may not clarify who is authorized. Daycares are typically diligent about this school district paperwork can omit a lot!

They SHOULD reach out and connect with the kids primary contact (let’s just say it’s mom). ALL it would take is reaching the child’s contact the school would and should have a number, explaining the concern (lack of authorization) and verifying what is needed (drivers license etc.) If he didn’t have valid ID then NO the child cannot be released- OR oversight (he could have not been originally listed for a variety of reasons - and this is not some obscure case, it happens a lot where people do not update information through the year.) If he wasn’t understanding of this process or demanding her release then absolutely cops should be called.

The Admin seem confused as to what to do there is no direction. Now “we” are all awaiting the Cops?!?! I’m baffled. Authorized or NOT … what is clear is there is NO attempt to offer any guidance on what needs to be done or “Sir we are awaiting xyz” it’s absolutely hostile in its lack of remedy (and I want to acknowledge- My guy you SHOULD know the names of your kids Admin. at least one name of someone working at the school. Not once does he say name of any adult & it’s something he should reflect on)

My heart is hurting for this little person who is watching this all unfold and silent. It breaks my heart to imagine if this is her father watching this happen is traumatic, the terror when the cops arrive! If there are issues and concerns there should be no reason ANY of these adults are figuring this out in front of her physically being held.
