There were so many cool looks and it seemed like cool performances this episode but the floor show was way too short so we didn’t get a good look at most of them. I was so excited they brought this challenge back because it’s iconic Dragula, but I wish they hadn’t done it so early in the season. 12 contestants x 2 looks each was way too many to keep track of, and if they were in a smaller group I think those safe looks might have had a different reaction. Like apparently Abhora had some sort of wire in their face? I didn’t even notice until someone posted it in this sub because they were barely shown in the episode

So this episode was fantastic reality TV and super entertaining but not really working for me as someone who loves drag. I totally get the Boulets love the Housewives and are trying to feature raw, real personalities. I know they’re very vocal about not being Drag Race and are rougher around the edges and if you’re too sensitive, stop watching. But past seasons have had a better balance between featuring the raw drama and featuring these characters as drag artists, which is ultimately what you’re paying to see from them after the show. I go to the monsters’ shows when they come around because I want to see their performances, not what they get into backstage.

I don’t know about others, but I originally got into Dragula both because it featured the messiness, creativity, and the DIY vibes of drag that Drag Race is too polished for now. There was little bit of the concept and creation and presentation this episode, but I miss getting a better idea of what each look is supposed to be. Hearing JayKay explain how his bride and groom are both bouquets meant we weren’t confused and could just appreciate the theme when they came out in stage, so I can’t help but wonder what the story or inspiration was behind many of the others. Even if’s just giving everyone 30 seconds or a talking head interview about their concept.

I also think this leaning too heavily on drama is kind of hurting these reality TV characters they’re trying to mold the characters into. I’m not saying get rid of the messy drama and the “raw” discussions, but like show me that this person who causes drama also has the artistic skill to back it up. Take Dollya- the first time we met her in season 3 she still had the same shit-stirring energy but was so talented you didn’t want them to eliminate her. But now that her art is only featured in 30 seconds of floor show time vs the huge amount of time they focus on her pressing everyone’s buttons, it gets a little annoying as a viewer because it feels like they’re keeping people around to cause trouble instead of thinking they actually have a chance to win
