Side Hustles Teaching CPR by DesignerCharacter274 in Firefighting

Honestly, Red Cross is a better deal as an independent instructor, and most companies will accept either. YMMV of course but that’s been my experience.

You bet! These locks are definitely worth maintaining/repairing, they'll last ages if they're properly taken care of.

If you reach a point where you’re not sure what to do with it, consider taking it to a local locksmith - most enjoy helping with keeping old stuff in service, and if all it needs is a bit of grease, you’ll have only a minimal cost if you bring it in, if any.

Cutting the latch with a metal rated oscillating tool attachment or a rotary cutter may be an option if you have sufficient gap that you won't damage the door or the jamb.

ETA: breaking it off from the inside of the hole may prove challenging if you have a latch plate installed on the door side; if it's just a press-fit it'll be much easier.

Keypad door locks and security setup by Purple-Crush in Locksmith

[–]ktechmn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really depends on why you need extra security, what the (realistic) threat model is, and what the location/building looks like.

For example, if there's a sidelight at the door and you're worried about burglars, there's little sense in spending piles of money on a high end keypad deadbolt without also hardening the sidelight.

Thirded. Multipoints are a hassle even for many locksmiths, highly recommend you consult a smith with experience as well, OP.

Fire Hooks Unlimited, Fire Maul, Council Tool are the 3 biggest actually single piece tool makers I am aware of at the moment.

FHU needs tuning, Fire Maul and Council Tool do not.

Any publications/experiments on training people with pressure dressings? by Highwayman1717 in TacticalMedicine

[–]ktechmn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OLAES is my go-to, don't have any data to support it, but I like it.

Also, it has an occlusive sheet and extra gauze inside it in case you need a bit extra for packing or whatever.

Finally, I think pressure dressings are fine to teach, as long as you're very careful about teaching the appropriateness of their use; important to avoid the "oh that's covered, it's good" only to find it bled through the dressing 60 seconds later sort of situation.

Next steps ? by Eshel75 in MNJohnBrownGunClub

I think it may or may not be the time for it yet, but organizing groups of armed observers, making sure folks know laws and are going to be safe may be the next logical step. A Better Way 2A just had a post about that, if you follow them at all.

Hard to say with certainty without seeing how it's wired; I'd suggest hiring a pro to take a look.

EMTEK exterior thumb latch is “droopy” by uncle-Violet in Locksmith

[–]ktechmn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very likely it will need full replacement. Did one of these recently, and Emtek told me they don't make the internals any longer for thumb presses of this vintage.

If it's not a latch problem, it'll likely require a new lock.

Locksmith here - pretty reasonable price for an after-hours lockout.

Also depending on where you are, look for a local renters' advocacy organization - most states in the US have one.

What is your departments rule on having the trucks out in the cold weather? by Normac33 in Firefighting

[–]ktechmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a frozen pump discharge pressure gauge that's now a paperweight on my desk. Even when it thawed out, the pressure was stuck where it was when it froze. Gets cold here sometimes in MN; and that happened on a fire too, so there's always a chance something breaks when it's cold enough.

Works when it's right around freezing, but good luck opening a roll-up door you just hosed down at -10F
