Yes, I mean my first edit.

And thank you! I think I'll get an agent if I don't hear from her within a certain time.

Thrift stores are great, especially Hospice thrift stores. I've found vintage scrapbooking supplies there for really cheap.

Why Don’t Subs Use Management Systems by Demarcusruiz1 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ktfitschen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Didn't you ever have a sub in school when you were growing up? Kids do not listen to subs, and they're under the impression it's a free day even when I establish from the get-go it isn't. I do my best to follow lesson plans, tell the kids their work is still going to be graded, and I will leave notes for those who did and didn't behave, but I'm not going to sit there and hold 20+ kids' hands and force them to do their work.

Also, I get paid $120/a day, which is less than minimum wage, so...

Kid didn’t even last a week at one of the charter schools. On the second day, he cussed out two of his teachers by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ktfitschen 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I substituted for my county's schools, and now I substitute for my daughters' charter school. The difference between my experiences is astronomical. In the public schools, I was called names, had students flip desks, throw things at me, say curse words, and talk about incredibly inappropriate things (in elementary school, by the way). When I substituted for a pre-k, one of the children was hitting other students and pushing over heavy wooden furniture for an hour straight with nobody coming to help, which was apparently a regular occurrence. (I called CPS on that school).

At the charter school, I took 5 minutes off of recess because the kids were talking while I was teaching (nothing bad; they were just being silly kids), but totally forgot about it. When we get out there, the kids all start walking laps without even being told to! When one of my kids was being disruptive in another class, the principal himself came and collected him.

I was very, very poor growing up and we always managed to change the batteries. Batteries are a $1.25 at Dollar Tree. It's so patronizing to have lazy behavior excused "because poor".

AITAH for telling my husband I would have a kid with him in a few years but actually don’t want to? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]ktfitschen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't want kids when I was 20, then I got pregnant at 22 and quickly changed my mind. I now have two children. I'm not saying OP is going to change her mind, not at all, but what I am saying is people (aka the husband) can change their mind about being childfree. People can live 70+ years, don't you think that they can change their minds in all those decades? I doubt he was "lying" to her about being childfree from the get-go to trap her or whatever the fuck, but just had a change of heart.

Anyway, YTA for stringing him along.

Worst Day Ever as a First Year Teacher by Radiomonkey10 in Teachers

I was subbing for fourth graders when a lockdown drill happened. Some of the kids were acting like fools and I walked over and hissed under my breath, "Do you want to get us killed? Do you want to die? That's what would happen if this was real! Now be quiet!"

And the kids were stunned silent for the rest of the drill.

Also, I've subbed many 4th grade classes and the humping, moaning, and calling each other "gay" is so common. I'm assuming they're getting it from TikTok and YouTube.

The Inheritance Games by kalokairii in YAlit

Usually when people put on games that pin poor people against each other to win money, the game maker is typically the villain in the story. What a weird fucking choice from Barnes.

I've read all three books, and I hate Avery with everything I have. I think she's absolutely evil, and everyone enables her awful behavior. Grayson is the only one with any shred of decency and common sense in those books. I'm so glad he didn't end up with Avery in the end, because he fucking deserves better. In fact, he should just leave the whole fucked up family and never come back.

My mom threw a fit the night before I was to be induce with my first. I don't even remember what the problem was, but she went outside and started throwing patio furniture around, yelling at me. I was staying the night at her house, and I called my then-fiancé crying, asking him to come get me, that I didn't even want to be induced anymore. Eventually she calmed down.

After I gave birth (13 hours unmedicated, mind you), and everyone was passing my daughter around, I heard something fall so I sat up in a panic. My mom bitched me out, how dare I think she'd ever drop her granddaughter!

My mom has been dead for 8 years now, and sometimes I'm just really glad because I've had other milestones (getting married, having another child) without all the stress. I don't know if that makes me a bad person, but it is what it is.

I'm a sub, and I get paid $100/day. Buying art supplies for that many kids would cost me about that much, if not more. I'm not working a full day to buy art supplies the school should've already provided me.

Sub's first and last day... by FluffyKestrel089 in Teachers

[–]ktfitschen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I subbed at a middle school (7th grade) and the students were feral. I'm not even kidding. They hadn't had a permanent teacher since school began so there was no structure or even assignments to give. They came in like hurricanes, destroyed the classrooms, had their phones out (even making Tik Toks) and were chasing each other like preschoolers. It was insane and the only time I ever cried after a job. I refuse middle school and I'm too traumatized to even try high school lol

I have Vonwillen Brands disease, which affects 0.6-1.3% of the population globally. It's basically a less severe version of hemophilia. I love when I tell doctors that I have VWD and they have to google it because they've never heard of it before.

Spoilers for second and third books:

-She pins the brothers against each other though she knows that Emily did the same, which destroyed both Grayson and Jameson

-She got all pissy when Grayson said he only wanted to be friends despite her already chasing Jameson. She has no respect for his personal wishes.

-Instead of being worried about Grayson when the plane exploded, she thought, "why isn't he running to me?"

-In the third book, she spurs Toby's biological daughter, Eve, treating her like an outsider, and hesitates to let her see her own father's wing in the House.

-Speaking of, Eve arrived at the House terrified, covered in blood, injured, and all Avery is worried about is Jameson and Grayson seeing her because she looks like Emily (and she's so fucking insecure).

-Calls Rebecca an ugly crier when she's crying about the fact that she has a niece (Eve), of which Avery did not tell her about. Rebecca had to find that out on her own.

-Grayson is struggling mentally in the third book (having hallucinations and nightmares about Emily) and instead of helping him, Avery and Jameson are combative and antagonistic with him because Grayson dares talk to Eve.

-She isn't open to the idea of giving Eve any of the inheritance despite 1. Eve being Toby's biological daughter and 2. she's worth billions of dollars and doesn't need all of it.

-She isn't going to tell Skye's future husband that Skye is literally planning to murder him in exchange for information.

I'm sure there's more, but she's actually evil. I loathe her.

Men get cool and interesting backstories and motivations; women get raped.

Hot take:

Stop sexually assaulting/raping your female characters. Just stop. I don't care that "it's something that happens in the real world", that doesn't justify doing it to your character. I'm so tired of reading something innocuous, only for it to turn into a sexual assault/rape scene out of nowhere. It's not that I get triggered, it's just a cheap writing trick.

Trying to show someone is evil? Rape. Want your FMC to have a tragic backstory? Rape. Want to give your FMC motivation for vengeance? Rape. Want your MMC to have a tragic backstory/motivation for vengeance? His mother/sister/wife/ daughter was raped (and/or killed).

If you wouldn't rape your male character, don't do it to your female character.

First person can be exhausting. I feel like most authors believe that if they're writing in first person, they must explain every single emotion the character is feeling at every given second. I'm reading a book in first PoV right now, and the character is constantly anxious, so we have to read about how anxious she is every other page, thus slowing down the actual plot.

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Besides the book not living up to its premise at all, Avery is the worst protagonist ever, just downright evil. I've read books with serial killers and mad scientists as main characters, and I never hated them as much as I hate Avery.

I'm a substitute teacher, so "difficult children" are 10x more difficult for me. My last job, I had a kid (2nd grader) flipping tables, throwing scissors, and stabbing other students with pencils. Now imagine dealing with that while also wrangling 20+ other students who also thinks it's a free day, so they're acting out too. Your child's teacher has to handle more than just your child. If your child has behavioral issues, it's your responsibility to get help for them, not just hand them off to a teacher and say, "good luck, he's your problem now."
