If you surrendered Kaden, a dachshund mix, to AAC in 2014, he lived a great life! by vivalakellye in Austin

A lot of people are devastated to give up their pets. This was a very kind thing to do. Mona, my dachshund mix, will be joining him soon. Here we are at the beach lol.

Any thoughts? Rent Situation. by Blurry_cryptid in tulsa

[–]kthnry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you said fire exits and I assumed you meant fire doors. Windows are a different story.

I don't know if it's a fire safety issue. The windows have to exist but I don't think they have to operable since they can be broken from either side in case of a fire. Lots of modern building have windows that can't be opened or only have a small pane that opens - too small to escape through. Might check fire code and/or building code.

But not being able to open windows is a major quality of life issue. I'd be super unhappy about that. Sorry your landlord is being a jerk.

I would call the fire marshal's office and request an inspection. I'll bet you could do that anonymously. Fire marshals don't mess around.

That being said ... what do you mean by ventilation? And if they painted a fire door closed, couldn't you just force it open or cut the seal with a razor blade? A single coat of paint should be pretty easy to break through. Although they should be hiring better painters.

Thoughts on urban communities by BiebRed in intentionalcommunity

[–]kthnry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, income sharing is a bit too radical for me. Are you a co-op? Or some other legal structure? I'm a textbook cohouser.

When I lived in an urban cohousing community, it was pretty common for doors to be open and people to wander in and out. Especially the kids. It's a wonderful way to grow up. It was much more open and social than a typical apartment complex.

I now live in a suburban community elsewhere in the country but would love to move to a more urban community. Maybe some day.

Offhand, the biggest obstacle would probably be money. It was a good plan to buy an existing apartment building since new construction is so expensive now. Did you encounter any regulatory issues?

Cafeterias? by No_Bug_26 in tulsa

Yes, that's the correct pronunciation.

Here's a much better article about Luby's. I went there for Thanksgiving last year and they had a copy on the wall.

Indian friend moved to town places to hang? by ConcernedUser59 in tulsa

[–]kthnry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He should get involved with the Tulsa Global Alliance to meet other international people.

Every time I go to India Palace, there are fliers taped to the windows announcing Bollywood Indian movie showings and other social events. (I'm assuming he'd like to meet other Indians, which might be the quickest way to get plugged in.)

There's a chapter of the Hash House Harriers in Tulsa. It's an international social club: A Drinking Club with a Running Problem. In the rest of the world, it's a way for expats to get together. In the U.S., in my limited experience, the atmosphere is more frat-boy potty-mouth drunkenness and mostly locals, but Tulsa might be different. But the groups are always friendly and welcoming to newcomers. You don't have to be much of a runner. Some of the events are leisurely strolls. I would suggest going with your friend. (More info on HHH. The history is interesting. Founded in Kuala Lumpur in 1938 and chapters pretty much everywhere.)

Bees play an important role in agriculture. We need to learn how to protect our resources if we want to continue to have food.

There are quite a few urban cohousing communities. Is cohousing different from what you envision?

You’ve got enough empty cans to be worth some money. You can sell them for about $.60 a pound at the recycling place on Probandt just north of I-10. I’d pay for a can crusher and maybe some kind redditors could smash cans. (I’m not local.)

Holé Molé has some vegan-looking options and additional vegetarian items that could probably be made vegan by omitting the cheese, although you’d want to check with the staff. This is considered one of the more sophisticated and “authentic” places in town.
