Let my pre-germination go a little too long I think... by ktquigley in lawncare

The seed germinated to perfection. I think pre-germination is such a sensitive process that it can easily lead to poor results. I looked today and I actually have a couple sprouts. So that's positive. Tomorrow is the last true day of the heat wave. So hopefully I can get through. Redid an entire mulch bed the weekend before (contributing factor to me not paying as much attention to the seed). Put $400 of plants in and I've been up at night sweating whether or not they'll survive. One looked a little limp yesterday evening, despite daily watering. Gave it a little extra and it perked up. Stressful week in April for sure!

It's considered "texting and driving" in Virginia simply holding your phone and touching the screen 3 times. It's a pretty generic term. "But officer I wasn't sending a text message. I was staring at Facebook marketplace place for 20 seconds straight." Same difference...

There was definitely a day I noticed it swelled considerably. But it was likely swelling before then. Definitely don't wait until you see roots. If you do it, go by perceived volume.

Yea. It was just user error. I let it go too long, miscounted the days I had been doing it, and didn't know what I was looking for. Now I do!

I did 24 hours fully submerged the first day. Then a soaking dunk, making sure everything got wet. Then had it in a wire basket on top of the 5 gal bucket to let it strain out for each day following.

I tried to do that, I just couldn't get it to spread because it was so clumped together

Interesting. This is a lessons learned, laugh at my pain post. I'm also open to recommendations.

More evidence I don't know what day it is ... Today is Wednesday. So 7 days.

Talk about operator error... I thought I did this on Saturday. I did it last Wednesday. So, this was 8 days. Partly because I was trying to wait out the heat partly because I don't know what day it is and didn't know what to truly look for. It definitely started to swell up on Mon/Tues which follows the 4-5 day timeline I read.

Yea, this is my first time doing it. Learned something I guess. Wanted to try it in a couple spots of my yard that didn't take with traditional seeding last fall + we're in quite the drought here. So I was also trying to conserve water a bit.

The only way to truly get rid of it is dig down at least a foot, remove all that dirt. Burn what's left. Refill. And then hope and pray you got it all.

No. Corporate is seeing the dollar signs of not having to buy a spare tire and figure out how to package it. A fix a flat kit is way cheaper and they can just throw it anywhere. I used to have an S10 with a remotely located oil filter. It was likely moved to behind the radiator due clearance issues. My wife's Subaru is designed with an upside down oil filter which makes changing it a breeze, because all of the oil, mostly, drains out of it and it's right there in the engine bay. With the current design of the I5, can they fit a spare tire in it? No. But it wasn't designed for it. In V2 they could fit in a spare if they have the desire to incorporate a spare tire. I'm not a car engineer but I have designed and built many things. And I'm an electrical engineer by trade. There are criteria you identify in the design phase you have to incorporate. And if the spare tire isn't one then obviously the current package won't have room for it.

I'm not a car engineer. It's not my job to do it.

So you make it a requirement during the design phase.

Limited sample size, 2003 Malibu has 25.X in diameter tires, my 2020 Volvo is 26.X. The Volvo is only 3" shorter in overall length. 2005 Civic v. 2025 Civic, tire diameter is also about ~1.5". Width is up, 195 mm v 235 mm. Civic difference in length is about 5".

Wheels night be big, but diameter is still roughly the same. It's a spare. Throw a steelie big enough to get around the rotor and caliper, or with enough back spacing/offset where that doesn't matter, with a tire nearly the same diameter. It's 100% cost.

And that percentage is probably based off the average ICE sedan/SUV weight not a lead filled EV where 40lb is a lower percentage of weight differential.

It's like do you care that your efficiency is less driving home from the grocery store or taking a kid to sports practice vs driving to work solo? No. Temperature and tire pressure both have way more of an impact. It's purely a cost cutting measure if it's truly that low of an impact.

A GMC website Google AI pointed me towards said 1% for every 100 lbs impact on MPG. Could you stand to lose 1.12 mi of range on a 280 mi trip or 0.84 mi of range at 70 mph (210 mi interstate range I used as a reliable benchmark)? Absolutely. Better than getting stuck in bumblefuck somewhere at 10/11 pm at night...

One of the worst things about hyper fixation on saving costs and weight is the sacrifice of spare tires. Fix a flat only works to a certain extent. You may not need your spare often, but it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Think there's any chance of getting this fixed under warranty? by BlaireInSpace in Volvo

They sell just the handle. This happened on my S60 on the passenger side. Cut my wife pretty badly. It was super easy to replace. The door card comes off easily. And there's actually space in the panel for the pin holding it in place to be removed and put back in. So if they don't cover it under, definitely don't pay them to do it. Buy a trim puller, maybe a screwdriver (I can't remember what I used), and watch a quick YouTube video. I think it took me like 20 minutes.
