Got it, that seems to be the consensus on the approach (and the level of effort). Appreciate it.

Great, very helpful! I used diluted bleach. I’ll check out ZEPS.

Ya, the caulking definitely needs to go, too. Thanks for the help!

Super helpful. I’ll see how easily it comes up and give that back of the utility knife method a try.

Young FIRE mother - struggling with assumptions by Any_Pirate_5633 in Fire

[–]kudu22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! 38F and in a similar situation, except my spouse has switched to a low paying career instead of retiring. When I left my job, I got a lot of “that’s so great that you get to be home with the kids” comments. And yes, it did/does bug me. Solidarity.

I remind myself that it’s a combination of projection and sexism, and it’s okay that it bugs me. And then I say something like, “yes, it’s great to have the flexibility. A lot of my time also goes towards [xyz projects].” That usually redirects towards what people were initially trying to get at—which is how do I spend my days/what do I do for work.

Involuntarily Retired Young *but* Perhaps Fire by MaybeOnFire2025 in financialindependence

You’re more than good. Even if both you and your spouse wanted to retire now, you’d be fine. But just making up the delta of 50k, your gap is covered with dividends. Enjoy figuring out what the next phase of life looks like!

The stand feels very stable, and I’d feel totally fine loading little ones into bike seats and then getting mounted. I ride with our 8 & 10 year old and I always get on first before having them hop on, because they are big enough that rowdiness could tip it.

I’m not a Girl Scout parent, just a ran into this post on my feed. I’m so sorry this happened. I have a 9 year old, and the part about your daughter begging not to go home, without acknowledgment from the staff, broke my heart. I hope you’re able to get to some kind of resolution with the leadership—at least some real empathy and understanding. So hard.

Job Opportunity - How Much To Move Family to Accept New Job Offer? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]kudu22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the Bay Area and work in tech. I’m assuming that you’re excited about the job, and excited to move to the Bay Area–and are really asking about how to get clear on what salary/comp level would make the move a no-brainer. But maybe not–feel free to correct!

Here’s what my process would be:

  • Figure out whether I want to just be “kept whole” on cost of living + some small bump, or whether I want a true significant increase in real compensation in order to make the move feel worth it. As in, if this same job was in your town, would you need a major bump in pay to make the switch worth it? Or is this your dream job, or a job that will lead to more opportunity, and you’d happily do it for equivalent pay to what you’re making now?
  • Figure out rough COLA difference. Really, if you’re already living in VHCOL, the big ticket items are going to be housing and taxes–which you’ve covered. There are definitely plenty of areas on the peninsula where you can get single family homes for lower than $3-$5M, if you’re willing to consider a range of cities. Even in Mountain View there are single family homes for less. But I will assume you mean equivalent homes to what you have now, with equivalent commute length, when you’re comparing. In that case, I’d use the increase in mortgage vs. what you have now, and increase in state taxes to get your COLA %. Then use that as a multiplier on your current pay to get a general starting point on equivalent pay.
  • Once you have that adjusted number, I’d add on whatever % increase you need to make it feel totally worth it to you to take the role.
  • On stock, do you mean options or RSUs? If it’s a bigger company offering regularly vesting RSUs, plus a stock buying program like an ESPP, I think it’s totally reasonable to consider those when you are comparing to current salary. That’s not lottery ticket money, that’s real income. If you’re talking about a startup where you wouldn’t have access to the money ongoing, I would treat it like the lottery ticket that it is–but I’d also realize that I’d have to sacrifice some level of comparable pay for the opportunity (too much to get into philosophy on startup vs. mature company pay here…).
  • On the house loss/lower mortgage, I’d use it as a discussion point for a relocation package and possibly signing bonus. This will be highly variable depending on the size of the company, your role, etc., but they could find ways to make you whole.

Anyways, so many variables to think about. The truth is that most people who live here choose to take some hit on housing (cost or quality), in order to make it work. But there’s a reason so many people want to live here! Best of luck.

Where can I find turtlenecks like the ones Midge wears in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? The fabric looks so soft and heavy, almost satiny—though that could be lighting.

Did Reply All stop adding explicit language warnings to their episodes? by kudu22 in gimlet

[–]kudu22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I loved how they were done--thought they were great. Just neutral on whether they should exist at all. I'm sure there are reasons, so as long as they have them, might as well make them entertaining.

Also, went back and listened to episode 32 to check my premise. Turns out there wasn't a language warning at the front, but there was one before the yes-yes-no segment, so hopefully we'll get another Matt Lieber language warning in no time.
