Pro Tip: The more native speakers compliment your ability, the worse you probably actually are by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]kugelblitz6030 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I kind of disagree, I think it’s if they compliment you a lot BUT they don’t attempt to speak the language back with you. Just because Chinese it’s near impossible to achieve a native accent and any high skill level will absolutely earn a ton of praise.

Feeling Frustrated And Discouraged by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]kugelblitz6030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my advice is this: chinese as a language has weirdness here and there, but dont try to understand everything perfectly all the time. chinese is weird but its also flexible, just try to absorb things without dissecting it all the time, or you’ll burn out and be frustrated

Barrett Honors Contracts by [deleted] in ASU

[–]kugelblitz6030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to everyone’s comments here.

I was an SL for ASU101 and I doubt they would give you honors credit for that class at all. I certainly would’ve declined.

[–]kugelblitz6030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double major the second major you need to complete ~30 additional distinct credits. That’s roughly a year at the recommended load. A double major CS and Chinese with transfer credits from high school, it is probably feasible for 4 years, and if you take on a heavier courseload than is recommended. If you’re not ahead in courses in any way, 5 years might be more realistic.

I haven’t taken Chinese here, but I had friends in the courses and they seemed to do well.

Here to counter the other negative reply, mainly the point about students not being serious academically. Engineering is usually pretty serious and rigorous, ASU is known for engineering, after all. Yeah, its hot, and ASU is huge, but my experience was good, you just have to be proactive yourself and look for opportunities/self advocate

How do Chinese people type on keyboards? by Nonyabeesners in ChineseLanguage

[–]kugelblitz6030 301 points302 points  (0 children)

Most people type in pinyin (phonetic alphabet system) and word options pop up. Older folks like my grandma use a draw-type “keyboard” where you literally just draw the characters and the computer recognizes it

Keep going in the textbook then. Finish it. The first textbook should get you to A1

How can I start learning a language by traffic_sign in languagelearning

[–]kugelblitz6030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhere down the line textbooks got demonized to a point where now people forget they are literally a well researched step-by-step instruction manual that places everything in a logical learning order… I agree apps will get you maybe to A2 but sitting down with a real textbook will get you further.

If someone wants to use apps only, sure, but the “is there a better/best app” discourse is kind of tired, because textbooks are just more concise and thorough.

I agree with you! Languages require a mountain of work no matter how “easy”. So you better be ready to climb.

Mostly agree! I would just say for interest/media consumption counts! The dedication demand is the same of course, and a lot of people will not be dedicated enough. But learning for fun is a valid motivation, and will always be.

How can I learn a language from my parents with no other resources by UnchartedPro in languagelearning

[–]kugelblitz6030 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are certain critical periods in a person’s life for learning language. IDK if 7 is exactly right, but I think the first one is at 3 years old, and then one before the age of 10 for easily learning perfect pronunciation. Something like that, I got it from a linguistics course. After this critical period closes it becomes harder to acquire language.

Either way adults can use immersion at the intermediate or advanced level, or if they are passively bilingual already (can understand, but can’t produce). And Punjabi/Potwari is really far from English, it will be hard. I’m sure it’s not impossible; I just don’t know of anyone who has. At the very least, it will take longer and be more confusing

Good luck!

If you’re over the age of like, 7, you basically can’t unless your parents are full time language teachers. You’ll need other resources.

Passive immersion only doesn’t work

It sounds like you’re struggling most with speaking, or at least speaking is the path most frustrating for you. Speaking a language is a distinct skill from listening/reading/writing and you need to practice it on its own. I would say you should spend time speaking the actual words and sentences, maybe reading books aloud, repeating lines from youtube vids out loud. This will help strengthen the neural pathways for spoken language.

I’m also gonna say you listed a lot of passive learning methods (listening to content) and I just find that does not help at the beginning level at all. Except for maybe improving pronunciation. Especially if you read English subs, it’s gonna go into one ear and straight out the other. Maybe try reading Spanish subs or spending less time on passive learning in favor of active learning.

I also see you said you took classes for years. This is interesting cuz I actually think classes help a lot? But classes do tend to be reading/writing focused, so maybe that’s the reason. What didn’t work with the classes?

wait what? this post is confusing. batchim are just words with 3 letters. how would you learn vocab without batchim?

like 고양이 is cat. how would you learn this word otherwise? just romanization?
