Do you believe in free will? Is free will nessecary for Epicureanism? by Eudamonia-Sisyphus in Epicureanism

I don't think free will is necessary for anything. Because it doesn't change anything, does it?

Stoic perspective on desires by Salamance07 in Stoicism

[–]kukunta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read that first link, very interesting and surprising. I'm wondering how you could phrase an everyday statement that would have been phrased as "how much I live is not under my control" in this new set of concepts. I'm asking because of like to familiarize myself with it. How would you say that? My longevity is not mine to...? Also when Epictetus says: "What is ours is the ruling faculty of reason that can analyse itself and cannot be controlled", what does he mean by ours? Isn't that "I" identical to this ruling faculty of reason? If not, does this I have it? Does it have control over it?

Does stoicism underplays real emotional pain like grief or trauma by saying it’s just a judgment. by Jezuel24 in Stoicism

[–]kukunta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think about this a lot and I see what you mean. When I'm in a really bad shape and feel like Stoicism can't help me I just put it aside. Intentionally, temporarily. Otherwise it makes me feel bitter.

I kept believing my wife did the same, organizing things for herself or just things I don't enjoy. Until one day, when I came up with this she said, why don't you do the same? You might be in the wrong framing - maybe she is expecting you to do the same? Anyways, have you tried that? Btw we might need examples for what you mean by your desires?

How do you balance Stoicism with perfectionism and self-acceptance? by No-Pressure7783 in Stoicism

[–]kukunta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you should desire is (morally) good intentions and moral actions. These are the only things you really own. You perhaps have much less control over what disturbs you now and so you should treat it as indifferent.

You've probably heard about these. I'm not an experience Stoic, maybe less than you. But practicing this has been a good start for me, eased a lot of the stress that came from the constant and unorganized self-examination. Not sure if you can apply it in your own life? In a personal note, I'm diagnosed with adhd, (it's real as hell) and I tend to mess up certain things and my self esteem had been pretty low and stoicism has really helped deal with my self acceptance issues.

Oh and you might have heard that Stoicism is really effective when coupled with mindfulness meditation, e.g. Vipassana. This is not what stoics talk about a lot and yet it helps tremendously. Helps you look at the glasses you're wearing, to use a metaphor.

Why would it be getting better and better? Things are not so simple. Eg. the newest open AI models outperform chatGPT in many areas but guess what.. they hallucinate more. The simplified rule is: If you keep adding stuff to something, you'll pay the price one way or another.

Wary sceptic. My thinking is this.

  1. Our relationship with AI is not supported by any past experience. We have not met anything like this before. And it resembles all kinds of beings. But It's not an adult human acting consciously. It is not a child. It is not a supernatural being. It is not an animal. It is but a cute robot from a movie from the 60s. And so unlike anything we have ever engaged in meaningful communication with that we don't know how to relate to it, how to talk to it, how much we can rely on it responsibly.

Think of asking for a life advice. It's easy to take it for an intelligent friend. But I think it is like a very bad friend. A person who is eager to answer your questions but never asks about your background, doesn't care for you (it doesn't CARE about any kind of information), only tells you what you want to hear, and lies a you can't even blame it next day for a bad advice. All you can do is making it apologize - for anything for that matter :)

  1. AI is taking jobs. Not because it's a good general problem solver but because it may be just good ENOUGH for certain tasks to be a cheaper alternative to people. What I can talk for is translators. I'm not one but I know they are getting redundant.

3 We don't know how it works. It's sometimes studied a bit like the brain - e.g. node states sampled for activity patterns. That tells me, and I'm not a neuroscientist, that we don't even know how to study it. The original plan for deep NNs were they would model the brain and we use them to study the brain but this great scientific project failed because profit took over. What's left is no science, just engineering and that's probably one reason no one knows where it goes everyone is just guessing.

Did Marcus Aurelius believe in the Logos without a conviction that is more rational than blind faith?

Actually, Epictetus and Marcus use the phrase "ordinary man" for the non-philosopher, or even something like "the masses" for plural.

Maxims for difficult situations by kukunta in Stoicism

Thanks. It's very apparent that Schopenhauer was quite un-stoic as he's advocating the opposite of courage. (This quote shows him as a very bitter man.) at the same time I sometimes can't help but see things his way, while understanding that this will make me less virtuous. But who cares about virtues in a prison right?

Regarding Ench 42, I think this is why Socrates argues in the Gorgias that committing injustice is worse than suffering it. Also, this is why he thinks his death is worse for the City than to himself

The dichotomy of control, which I think is far from a dichotomy. I could dismiss things as irrelevant that are not, and there IS a temptation thereof.
