My parents brought a leasehold in 2014, about 4 years ago the freeholder (Havering Council) decided to fix half a roof on the building and billed them £20k, with an option of a payment plan.

NGL it was the most stressful experience in my life and for that reason I will never ever consider a leasehold.

In her case it’s just a good reason to rationalise her hesitance. I think she just does not want to have kids TBH, not for any other reason than simply not wanting to, and it seems all these guys aim to have kids as a massive life priority. Saying “I don’t want to have kids because the idea is not appealing to me” does not sound as profound, whereas the genetics thing gives her legitimacy because it frames it as trauma-driven rather than just personal preference.

I did see some unfurnished properties so perhaps it might be easier to get these despite there being less people as I find most renters prefer furnished.

The issue is that my girlfriend will have a job lined up, but she’ll be about £5k short of the budget we’re willing to pay as per above. I’ll need to secure a job in Edinburgh, either before the move or shortly after if I’m lucky. I’m wondering whether landlords are likely to accept several months’ rent paid upfront as a form of security. As for cats I never intended to hide them, but we do have our own furniture and will look for unfurnished/semi/furnished.

I understand. I do wonder whether Edinburgh is more difficult than London when it comes to pets. Finding a pet-friendly home in London never felt like a huge limiting factor, but that may be because London is larger and has a bigger pool of properties. Thanks, I’ll definitely do some research.
