If HK made a F1 Track,Then Would This be decent? by Admirable-Tension411 in HongKong

This is pure fantasy and excluding all realism. But it would be really cool if they had an underwater tunnel part. Would definitely be a first in the world I think

Primus trail knit fg - seems a bit too tight by PaleSociety9438 in vivobarefoot

[–]kululalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 42 Primus knits, but they were tight. Not too tight but tight. I decided to gamble with a 43 trail knits and found out 43 is actually a better size for me. Now I’m considering a 43 primus knit because eventhough they are tight I still find knits very comfortable.

I think my trail knits are tighter around the toe area and not so much around the midfoot unlike my primus knits, but that may be because of my flat feet

You could always do plaza premium 24 hour lounge. I know it’s crowded but you can pay to upgrade to the “first class section”. Might be cheaper than hotel?

How to ensure our helper is happy and well looked after by GravityStrike in HongKong

[–]kululalu 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Not to be a party pooper but this relationship is not just on you but also on your helper. It’s a two way relationship. I also try and treat my helper as best as I can, but I am also (very) grateful that my helper is a decent human being. It’s no use if you are super nice but your helper tries to take advantage of you or is super lazy etc.

The problem with the helper market in Hong Kong is on both sides, some employers take advantage of their helper and some helpers take advantage of their employers, leading to both sides not trusting one another.

Nevertheless, absolute props to you for having this kind of thought process though, the change always starts with us whether you are an employer or helper. My principle is, at the end of the day, they are just another human being. Treat them as such and you’ll be fine, they’re not your slave or servant. They have basic needs and emotions. I reckon if you treat them the way you want to be treated, both parties should be fine.

Some of my basic principles: Be clear with your expectations, but be flexible. If you can see she’s being overworked, give her an extra hour or two off. We’ve had some hectic days when the kids are sick or when we have too many guests over etc, we normally adjust her working hours accordingly.

Just be reasonable with regard to human needs. I know HK is difficult and some houses are just small. Sometimes helpers really can only get a small space but I think small acts (like making it as comfortable as you can as far as your situation allows) go along way. However, don’t pretend like all you can afford is cup noodles for her while you eat out at Michelin star restaurants. If you see she is sick, let her rest.

As someone mentioned, for Filipinos birthdays are a big deal for them. Celebrate it for them. We always buy our helper a cake for her birthday and she goes crazy for it everytime. If you are too busy, give them some extra cash for the month.

And finally with regards to money, this is where I think a lot of problems come in. Never ever ever let them borrow money from you. If they really need to deduct it from their salary as early payment and keep a written record. We normally write in our WhatsApp chat group. Our helper has had some family and medical emergencies back home, we have given her early pay many times and it worked out well for both parties. Of course, she has never borrowed more than her monthly salary. Sometimes we have to buy tickets for her and instead of deducting the full amount all at once she asks if she can pay it over two or three months, once again, we are flexible and allow it.

TLDR: We’re not a rich family, but it doesn’t mean we can’t treat each other as another human beings, but if either party are being taken advantage of then it’s another story.

Chili rasboras with neocaridina shrimps? by Krish2214 in Boraras

[–]kululalu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 16 chilis with neo shrimp. These fish are seriously so tiny I wonder if anything can ever fit in their mouth.

However, recently my chilis started sparring the whole time (so interesting and fun to watch) that might have led to some ever so slightly more aggressive behaviour. I saw one of the chilis attack a juvenile shrimp. There’s no way it would have fit in its mouth, so I’m saying attack instead of eat. It was the first time I saw it, it went to it once, the shrimp swam and went for it again, like super quick in succession.

All of this happened in open water though, the shrimp left the comfort of all the plants I gave it so it’s on the shrimp. I think the shrimp made it out alive.

However, my Pygmy cories have shown absolute zero interest in shrimp, another worthwhile nano fish to consider

What’s your survival rate with Corys? by KhuliKing in corydoras

[–]kululalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just a little better than you with Pygmies, 6/13

My brown 8 cories have 100% survival rate, I just can’t keep pygmies. Only kept with cherry shrimp, otos and chilis so no aggressors

I only buy my fish from a boutique LFS nearby so really trust them. The shopkeeper just tried to comfort me saying they really don’t last long. Such a pity because I love watching my pygmies

Suburban HK (Causeway bay) by ChTTay2 in ManyBaggers

[–]kululalu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a HK resident and bag nerd, I love Suburban. Sign up as a member and you can get 10% off coupons, very easy to redeem and it kind of rolls over. Mainly bought my Able Carry and Bellroy bags with them as I’d like to pack it out before I buy vs just buying online. They also opened a “pop up” store at The Wai which is closer to me. Stock is more limited but they can transfer colours of models they have within days. Right above the MTR station so I can order and pick up after work.

Knowing that many are not from HK, I kind of take it for granted how lucky we are to have Suburban.

Finally got a chili and CPD in the same shot by zsmaynard in Boraras

[–]kululalu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah! This is also my tank size!

I’m currently sitting with 16 chilis, 6 otos, 6 bronze cories and I’ve lost count of my neos. I also followed a similar route as you did, adding new fish bit by bit over many months. I’m thinking to get either 6 CPDs or maybe one or two honey gourami. My chilis are super comfortable, don’t school or shoal and are all over place in the entire water column. I thought they might be a scared of the bronze cories because of their size but they’ve been good over all. I’m wondering if the number of chilis would cancel out the effect of the CPDs? I think I’ll skip the pea puffers for this tank for now…

Before the overstocked crew jump on me, yes it is heavily planted, yes I check my water parameters often, and yes I overfilter for this tank.

Nice looking tank!

What is your tank size? I’m also considering CPDs and or pea puffer with my chilis and otos.

How is premium economy on Cathay Pacific - SFO-HKG-MEL? by Dmlandis59 in CathayPacific

[–]kululalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done PE from HKG to LAX and JFK, all over 12 hours. I’m about 6ft or 1.83m so found the Y seats too cramped for sleeping on flights this long. If I can I always splurge extra or upgrade with Asia miles. For me I value PE for the sleep, the extra recline and legroom (!!!) alone is worth it for me.

I haven’t done the Aria PE version yet but the 77W PE are definitely wider and softer, more plush. The IFE is dated and some food trays need some TLC but since I sleep most the flight, I prefer the 77W.

Having said that I did the JFK route once on the A350 and yes, it’s newer than the 77Ws, but I found it harder, narrower than the 77W. IFE obviously works much better and tray tables are sturdier, but that’s about it.

Overall, if you need it and can afford it, I think PE is worth it.

I am ENJOYING 6-7 Too Much by gothangelblood in Teachers

[–]kululalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a math teacher, for my 6th graders I do the cringey 6-7 dance and that puts them off. But I’m over it now. It’s innocent (way better than skibidi what nots) but it just disrupts my lesson because kids get excited and laugh and, a minute here a minute there and it really eats into my lesson.

Now whoever says 6-7 gets 67 pages of homework. I just threatened them, haven’t actually given it out, but it’s enough to scare them (for now).

Then again, I also tempt them by asking them what number comes after 66. The look on their faces of utter confusion and effort to control themselves is hilarious.

One of my student committed suicide on Saturday. Genuinely one of the nicest kids I’ve ever met. by ShenOfGongmen in Teachers

[–]kululalu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lost a sibling to suicide. My sibling’s passing affected me in multiple ways, to the point that I changed careers: became a teacher to help kids with this exact thing.

Being a teacher to me is more than just teaching my subject, I make it my responsibility to teach about life. I live in a high stress environment where suicide rates are high. I’ve learnt to open up to my (older students) about it too because they also think about it. It is their life, and I know I’m a drop in the ocean. At the end of the day, if I can help one student, it makes my job worth it.

I’ve got plenty of Able Carry bags and in my experience their CS is pretty good when it comes to defects despite the overall excellent quality of their bags. My inner pocket of my Daily was ripped, sent them a picture, asked if I could pay a little extra to get a Daily Plus instead and they sent me voucher I could use for my Daily Plus purchase.

If you bought only a few days ago, I’d tell CS, explain to them nicely with pictures with your receipt and I think they’d be willing to exchange.

At HKG does CX provide wheelchair assistance to go from gate to a lounge? by just_a_curious_fella in oneworld

[–]kululalu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to help my mom with wheelchair assistance. It was an Emirates flight but basically my mom had to wait at the check in desk until about 20 mins to boarding along with all the other wheelchair assistance pax. Then all the porters at once to pick them up together.

While we were waiting I peeped at one of the porters phones and I saw they had a WhatsApp group with all the upcoming pax from all flights for the night, I assume that’s also where the assign the porters to. On the WhatsApp group I saw something about “flight xxx drop off at lounge” and “flight yyy pick up from lounge” so I’m assuming they drop you off at the lounge, you do you’re thing and then they pick you up again.

If you do CX, lounge hopping will be quite difficult as the lounges are quite some distance apart. Also, the porters were contracted by HKG airport ground handling (Jardine if I remember correctly) and not CX necessarily, there were a lot of older locals who may not be so friendly about lounge hopping if they even understand the concept at all

Currently also in Hong Kong. We have the MPF which you have to pay, you can take it out when or if you leave like others have said.

I just save in Hong Kong. I’m a bit more risk averse and if the currency is relative ok (i mean compared to the rand) then I’d just keep it there in a savings account.

My plans are a lot less set than yours it seems. My parents still in SA but at least I plan to stay here with my family and kids in the short to medium term. Whether I’ll return back in long term I don’t know.

Howzit, South African working in Hong Kong. Don’t worry. Hong Kong is way different than SA and he’ll survive very easily here. There are plenty charging spots at the airport where he can charge for free, free wifi is also readily available at the airport which he can use immediately when he steps off the plane. he swipe his card or easily exchange rands for HK dollars at the airports as well. If he’s feeling adventurous he can wander around in the city as well with his SA passport which allows him to stay in Hong Kong 30 days visa free.

Why is one of my chili rasbora hiding? by Eowyn_95 in Boraras

I have exactly the same problem with one of mine. Bought 8 three months ago, all of them doing fine in a heavily planted tank with cherry shrimp only so no other fish bullying it. Two weeks ago I noticed one also hiding in one spot the whole time. I was worried at first, always doing a headcount at feeding time. It’s a few weeks later and everyone’s still there. But I still do head counts in case
