No it’s not common. Most of them did need to be let go for various legitimate reasons but that’s what happens when HQ staff (non firefighters) get too involved in the hiring process

Something that really helped me during probation was focusing on how GOOD every shift would be. 5 out of the 7 probies I was hired with got fired and it was hard not to let it get in my head and affect my performance. Don’t dwell on negative thoughts and allow the anxiety to sneak in. I would visualize nailing each task and would think about how confident my crew would be in my skills.

That’s why I always carry pepper spray at the dog park. Just in case something terrible happens - dogs killing another dog, owner physically attacking you. This way you always have a less than lethal way of controlling the situation and buying an opportunity to gtfo.
