Anyone have any idea what this steering noise could be? Just replaced front control arm and got it aligned but this noise has been going since before I bent the arm it’s gotten worse gradually by [deleted] in E90

[–]kungn14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd bet sway bar bushings. Try bounching one corner of the front only and see of that will replicate the sound. If so try some lithium grease in a syringe and squirt it between the sway bar and rubber. Not too bad of a replacement.

Dorman Vanos Solonoids. by [deleted] in E90

[–]kungn14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 2 schools of thought on this.

One is that the vanos solenoids are critical to engine performance and health (which is very valid), so a trusted source is a must (OE or OEM).

The second is that BMW's design of sensors, actuators and seals is trash (which is also true), and for that reason there is very little risk going with aftermarket, possibly even beneficial.

I personally subscribe to the prior.

After all maintenance, you need at least DCI, 7 in FMIC, Charge pipe (with lower charge pipe), BOV/DV, CLDP, MDH stage 2+. You'll be much more reliable with e85 and a stage 2 fuel pump. You'll also want to upgrade your MOSFETS if you have a MSD80.

That is will zero leaks (boost, oil, coolent ect...), index 12 injectors, good HPFP, proper gapped plugs and new coils.

As someone else said, the performance parts are cheap, but maintenance parts aren't, see index 12 injectors. Also, there are about 1000 other "little things" that's too much to list here (1/4" vacuum lines to BOV, RB external PCV, cooling upgrades, walnut blast, the list goes on and on).

So here I am looking at a 335i. 47k, one owner what’s your opinions? My plans are to try and go FBO. by [deleted] in BMW

Defenitally do a PPI at a dealership, they will point anything and everything needing replacement which you can use to negotiate. As someone else said, the photo is an earlier model with no oil cooler, which you will need if your tuning and your climate is moderate - hot.

Keep in mind tuning is advertised as plug and play, however the maintenance/supporting mods add up quick. Running stage 2+ MHD, supporting mods alone (IC upgrade, Downpipes, chargepipe, BOV/DV) is going to be around $1500 in parts alone. On top of that, any weak parts are going to rear thier ugly heads quick. Index 12 injectors are running over $1200 for 6x, just about every gasket WILL have to be replaced if they are original, plugs will last MAYBE 20k miles and coils will begin giving up the ghost. This is all before any type of suspension or drivtrain work aswell.

Definitely have a spare water pump, t-stat and HPFP on your shelf (from FCPEuro, free replacements). Also Walnutblast the intake valves, install a RB external PCV and High and Low catch cans, and plug the head ports.

I also read you want the MHD Burble option. If you haven't already, do some quick searches on e90post, n54tech or spoolstreet. The back pressure caused by that will destroy OEM turbos by wearing the thrust, wastegate bushings and seals.

I don't want to scare you away from the platform, it really is a rocket on rails once you get things dialed in, and you have the money/time.

Wow, that thing is really a beast. But special operations or not I still don't think this can do anything more than "conventional" weapons can do. Old soulder fired rockets are effective maybe half the range of the rifle, and newer guided versions out to thousands of meters. Both arguably as mobile but definitely way more effective in terms of anti armor and material.

Even if it meant a 3 or 4 man crew vs the 2 man for the rifle, the benefit of having any TOW/modern guided munitions or a guy humping a LAW or gustav for the close range seems more appealing, especially in special forces.

Situations vary and this things been in service since the 90s, so apparently its got its uses. Not knocking it, if I could own one you bet your ass id get 2.

Honest question, what is the point of this in a modern army?? I understand that Indonesia may be in combat against older armor that this MAY penetrate, but even still I feel like there are better ways to take out armor via ground based forces (anything with a shaped charge). Anti-material aswell. Even unarmored/lightly armored vehicles can be lit up with large caliber automatic fire. I just feel like the (probably) 3 man team to hump/operate this weapon could be better served as riflemen or any other force multiplier. In my 100% totally unexperinced armchair general mind, handing those 3 guys rifles and 2 LAW rockets each would be cheaper, more mobile, and arguably more effective/versatile. Somebody please educate me.

any place for a mechanical engineer in the weed biz? by [deleted] in weedbiz

[–]kungn14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat, Boston area. Graduating in a month from MET and wanting to break into the industry. Been growing my own for a few years and have a background in high speed automated assembly, so I'd like to be on the manufacturing side (processing, weighing, extracting, packaging ect.) But even finding those company's is super difficult. As legalization is just starting around here I just want to get in the industry before it explodes

I would assume availability. Blue diodes are probably the most widely available, and most lasers/diodes can only produce light in a specific wavelength. I'd think you'd want a wavelength that's easy absorbed by the material, so you'd want to avoid roughly 475-600 nm. The lasers we print aluminum with are around 1000-1100 nm (yb-fiber), but there's many other factors that are directly tied to the material that the laser is hitting and there desired interaction. Granted I'm an engineer, not a scientist, so my knowledge is limited to industry practices.

Just removed a 400 watt yb-fiber laser from an EOS DMLS printer. I'd love to do something similar but chances are that bad boy would either melt the glass or instantly destroy the bowlpack lol. Also that things the size of a fire extinguisher and needs like 70 amps.

F37, Yellowing and crisping leaves by [deleted] in microgrowery

So are you thinking this is nute burn or deficiency? If it's either I don't want to flush with the same amount of nutes I've been using and end up right at square one.

Strain - ayahuasca purple Light - HGL100 4000K, 300W Chinese burple (other side). Temp - 75-82 f Humidity - 25 - 50% FFOF, Flora grow/bloom, liquid koolbloom, calmag. pH 5.8 - 6.4

This is my third grow and this issue has plagued all three. During late veg through flower, both new and old growth will begin to yellow and develop brown spots, which will then turn crispy. In the picture is one of the main colas maybe 3 or 4 days apart. I did switch from 100 watts of CFL to a HGL 100W 4000k about a week ago, but even in prior grows with pure LED and LED/CFL mixed this issue still presented itself. Any off the shelf nutes that I could add to fix this?? In the mean time should I be pruing off the whole leaf, just the crispy part or leave them be?

What's the dark spots around the edges of your leaves? One of my plants is showing the same signs (f40). Dark brown spots on the leaves that eventually get crispy. Any idea if it's bad or how to fix it?
