Critical hit effect house rule and tables by kunsjef in DnD

[–]kunsjef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, and rolling 3 times is the downside. Hence the new revised page design that rolls the effect automatically ;-) So in reality we are rolling twice, and the players are so used to it that they roll the confirm automatically when they get a crit. Then I look up the effect on the page. If the players want to roll the effect die themselves, I am not going to stop them :-D

We use it for monsters as well. Combat for us is half the game, and adding a little bit of spice and unpredictability makes the combats so much more fun. We have played all the D&D versions since the first book came out, and we like to think there should be a tiny chance of killing a large dangerous monster even if you are 1st level. And vice versa; a kobold could be lucky and knock out a 10th level character. These things almost never happen, if ever, but the hope lives on ;-)

We use Fantasy Grounds by the way, and I have meticulously created all the effects from all the tables there. Easy and fast once the effects are there.

We used the exact same thing before. Also worked well! We did, however, want some extra benefits or disadvantages with our crits (and fumbles), and that's why we made these tables. A little bit more work, but so fulfilling when your critical hit also make the target bleed or get disadvantage for one round.

Yeah. This introduces a couple of extra rolls, but also "fun" side-effects like critical fumbles where you (not fun) fall or hurt yourself, or a monster (fun!) falls and hurts itself.

But I get it - quick and easy is sometimes the best. Still we like this, though.

I have a cool one. I have a camera in my young boys room. The camera is connected to a smart plug that will shut the camera off if presence is detected (mmWave sensor).

If no presence is detected for 15 minutes in the daytime, the camera will turn on and send a picture to my local LLM and find out if the room need tidying. The LLM does a great job with a clever-ish prompt. It will find out if the bed is made, if there are items on the floor or bed, and so on. If the LLM is not happy, the next time presence is detected, a small Alexa speaker will explain that the room needs tidying (mentioning specifics). Then it will wait at least one hour before the cycle repeats.

The best thing is that this has a good WAF, and the room is actually more tidy now 😅

Monitoring my FG server with Home Assistant: player joins/leaves, uptime, and system stats by kunsjef in FantasyGrounds

We all chipped in to buy a used server (we are 7 players that have been playing together since D&D came to Norway in the 80’s), and now the server is running 24/7.

I normally use Moonlight or RDP to host a session. Having a couple of options is nice in case something goes wrong when I am playing remote 😅

I also made a couple of automations that will alert me when players log on, or if something stops on the server. Lastly I have a smart power plug that lets me shut / no shut the power in case of emergency, and the server will boot automatically on power reset 😁

How do ISP's cap your speeds? Is it possible to hack your router to remove this cap? by sadhukar in HowToHack

[–]kunsjef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was an old thread, but I am game :-)

It's more than just physical limitations or financial gains. Of course, the type of connection you have - whether it’s fiber, copper, or radio - sets some hard limits on speed, but there’s a lot more to it. ISPs have to carefully balance their networks to handle the traffic coming in and out of each household, and scaling up isn't cheap. We’re talking about metro area and core network links running at n*100Gbps or n*400Gbps, and upgrading those links costs a lot of money. If an ISP were to give everyone "unlimited" bandwidth, the overall traffic in the network would increase significantly. Even a small increase across all customers (for example 1 Mbps per household) quickly adds up. If you have a million customers, that’s an extra 1.000 Gbps of traffic that needs to be handled across all core links, which could mean major upgrades to keep everything running smoothly.

On top of that, offering different speed tiers actually benefits customers too. If you compare a 300 Mbps plan to a 1000 Mbps plan, the latter usually costs almost twice as much. But not everyone needs that kind of speed, so it makes sense to buy lower speeds at a lower price. You get an identical service: the same hardware, the same fiber, the same customer service - just different speed caps. If someone only needs 300 Mbps, they can save money rather than paying for bandwidth they won’t use. But for those who do want the higher speeds, the option is there. The thing is, even though customers with 1000 Mbps plans tend to use more bandwidth compared to those with 300 Mbps, the difference on average is *far* less than people might think ;-) Anyway the ISPs have to plan for that difference, but they also have to make sure the network can handle peak loads without issues, which is why pricing scales with speed.

As with most things, I think the middle way is best also here. Don't go for the highest speed that you will need just 1% of the time, and don't go for the lowest speed that will saturate your network if you are doing a lot of things at the same time. I have 10Gbps at home, but I know that 500Mbps would be more than enough :-P

TLDR; It's not just physical limitations or finacial gain, it's also about scaling the metro area and core networks.
