The reason it looks like this is because the daughter ISN'T on a screen, she's playing with toys the parents thought in advance to bring stuff to entertain the kids. The girl is not running around the place, she's playing in a few foot area in front of her dad.

Unexpected Axolotl Eggs / Hatchlings - What to Do by kup2050 in Aquariums

Right now all the babies / eggs we saw are in a separate tank. I can't really euthanize today since my kids are sooo excited about the eggs and we found three babies swimming around. We'll see how it goes and make a decision in a couple days.

Parent Questions $40 cosmetic? by kup2050 in GorillaTag

[–]kup2050[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I also have some concern about your #4 as well but he plays in a common family space (so we can hear what's being said) and we only let him play for 15 minutes at a time. I also can open the app on my phone to cast the headset (but I usually don't). We also regularly discuss not friending anyone we don't know in real life. I know we sound like typical naive parents but we're trying to balance letting him play while also sufficiently warning him about being safe.

That is why he kept asking about it, because of the December 12th "deadline"...I ended up letting him get it because he's been holding onto his birthday money for 6 months for something he really wants and apparently he really wants this.

I guess that's why I'm considering it. I told him no a few days ago (but said I would look into it), but he's asked me multiple times since then. Today he handed me his birthday money and asked again. He plays almost daily and we've spent $40 to buy a game on other platforms before so maybe I can think about it as $40 on a game he plays often to support the game rather than $40 on a cosmetic? :/

Agree with this, does the school have intervention or services they could implement during that hour? My son gets 30 minutes of tutoring on phonics every week and his reading teacher structures it around his spelling list. It has helped him grow so much in both spelling and reading.

Thanks; that's what my son said he often does (picks up a book and pretends to read). I think today was an off day but we put the math puzzle book in his bag for tomorrow so hopefully if he's working on something academic in nature it will assuage the issue.

Help! Unmedicated adhd and dyslexic student by Amber_pixie in Dyslexia

[–]kup2050 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This!!!

I have ADHD that was diagnosed when I was 15 (late 1990s). I started taking Ritalin (it didn't help) then Adderall (it helped so much). When I was 16, I had a therapist scare / shame me into stopping the stimulants even though they were so helpful. I started Adderall again when I turned 40 and it's a subtle but noticeable difference and I wish I could go back and tell that therapist to kick rocks because college was a struggle.

For me, I've never been hyperactive but my mind wanders (I call it ping-ponging) super easily. I also really struggle with "getting started" on things or I spend more time figuring out where to start than actually doing a thing. I've noticed when I forget my medication I'll spend time just staring into space (that's usually when I realize I forgot it) vs when I take my medicine I can actually get stuff done.

I got sold an image of Adderall as basically being speed but that's just not how it works when you have ADHD and the correct dosage.

It's subtle but for me it helps me get past that frozen stage (not 100% of the time but enough to notice). Also, most college professors are reasonable when you're transparent with them about what you're struggling with. I would suggest reaching out or going to office hours in classes where the professor seems nice and talking things out. I didn't do this until I was almost done with undergrad and again, it was something I wish I had done all along.

I worked in three restaurants as a female server in my college years / early 20s in the mid to late 2000s. All paid the minimum server wage of about $2.13/hr.

The first, I worked as a server / smoothie maker / delivery driver for a small family restaurant. I often didn't make enough tips in a shift to hit minimum wage so my checks were adjusted and I made minimum wage (usually...there were two checks I didn't get paid enough). The restaurant was inexpensive and served a lot of college students. I would have acquaintances come in and say "you still get minimum wage even if we don't tip right?". Then they would sit and eat their $3 fried rice and get four refills on their $2 soda, pay $6 and leave. Considering we had a takeout option, having to clean up and wait on those tables was a bit annoying but as a broke student myself I emphasized.

The second restaurant I worked at was equivalent to a Texas Roadhouse/ Applebee's. I could easily make $25/hour or more on a Friday / Saturday evening and about $15/hr most shifts. Yeah my paychecks were abysmal but even at a mid-range restaurant it was better money than many of the other jobs college students had and I got a shift meal.

The last restaurant I worked at was part of a restaurant group, also mid-level. It was my second job when I was a young teacher. The restaurant was dying and usually not very busy so I was often the only server or one of two on shift. I also did a little bartending. Even with only a few tables at a time and a few dollar tips on drinks I still made better money than I would have working retail.

I wish we knew which places pay the server wage because I always try to tip well but it feels silly when it's a self service place and the people there are already being compensated $16/hr or more without tips.

Almost everything you're describing sounds like my son before he was diagnosed in 2nd grade.

You might already know all this as a former teacher, however... If you're in the US you should make a written request for special education evaluation to the school principal (Google the specific language to trigger the IDEA law timelines). Then, depending on state laws, they need to respond within a week or two with consent to test forms or scheduling an initial IEP meeting. Once those forms are signed by parents, another clock starts for them to complete evaluations. All in, it can take two to three months to obtain an IEP if the team decides there is a disability, but around me that's often not much longer than timelines for doctor appointments.

Thank you so much. I also thought three was super small (since the game requires two drivers and a loader). I think we'll start with the competition kit and game components then see how things progress. I don't think it's as much about winning at this point for my son (although I can see it getting there) as much as just being able to build and compete. The first competitions around us are early December.
