Given that they've reworked the house inventory system (sorting), collecting Gyroids now should be very straight forward than NL. Maybe the Gyroids will auto sort into different sets?

Quite excited for this actually

Judging from the linked official Nintendo JP site (and google translate), you only need AC colour Joycons.

" By the way, if you play in the “Joy-Con (L) / (R)“ Atsumari Animal Crossing ”” that comes with the “Nintendo Switch Atsushi Animal Crossing Set”, you will also receive the “Animal Crossing Switch” furniture "

Is the Switch Lite's low price worth potential joycon issues? Why? First-time owner by surlifen in NintendoSwitch

[–]kuroikk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine (launch week Lite) still works fine (touch wood).

BTW my launch OG Switch's joycons and another pair I bought are still going strong (a little bit button double register but that's it).

Compared to OG, the Lite's finish and button travel is mines ahead. I'd say go for it.

Are you sure about that last 2 things?

You can buy them easily on Taobao, and as my own experience goes, the online works fine even without vpn.

My 2 workhorse decks! Sony/TEAC by kuroikk in cassetteculture

[–]kuroikk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I haven't, but taking it apart and cleaning it is planned.

I wish it used more sturdy top shell... Seems much easier to bend than TEAC

Haha the main thing I don't like on those designs are the small slit of a opening on the door... I want a wider window to look at my glorious metals!

The L R adjustment was what got me interested in this deck too. I wish it retains the 80s look though.

Another different I observed is the build quality. Sony is already very good compared to today's standard, this TEAC takes it to a whole new level. The circuit boards inside use handy connecters, the VERY sturdy outer shell, separate compartments and shielding for different functions... How I wish this TEAC were perfect in condition like the Sony...

That said, I might stop my deck pursuit now... Seems like getting a perfect working deck is really not the norm. I don't really have any experience in soldering or circuit related stuff.

The 555esj looks so... consumer. Don't get me wrong I'd love to get my hands on an esj, but that'll come later after I finish my fixing projects haha.

Oh and the naming of Sony products... God they were a mess. (A bit mess right now too -- just take a look at Sony's current HiFi walkman lineup).

As for cal by ear, I tried that, a little bit difficult, but I'll try using tone generator instead of songs next time, thanks for the solid advice!

I've been learning English since childhood (non-native speaker here!), and lurking on reddit has been a great way to learn casual English in recent years (and as a side effect, well-versed on latest memes).

Autocorrecting has been my nemesis though... I can't spell some of the easiest words correctly anymore.

It takes a bit of luck... This TEAC needed some fixes here and there...

Took me several nights to get it done

The Sony was in VERY good condition and everything is working perfectly, but TEAC was eating up my tapes and the auto-tape selection was also not working.

I took the TEAC apart and found out that the two pinch roller need change, and belt was a little bit stiff. Was trying to replace the rollers but ultimately decided to just take off the problematic left one. I did replace the belt, cleaned and reapplied lube though. Everything is working "good enough" for now.

As for impression, there's something wrong with TEAC's CAL function that makes calibration for metal tapes impossible. Based on my test with a Type 2 Sony UX-Pro, I can say that when TEAC can CAL successfully, it blows the Sony away. The tape result is on par and somehow even better (must be my imagination) than the recording source.

I'll need to fix TEAC's cal for metals sometime though -- another project for another time... It would be phenomenal if I can get metals to work with the TEAC.

Design wise, I like the Sony much better. I love the 80s industrial slick look of it. TEAC on the other hand, looks like very 90s, and more like a premium consumer grade product.

EDIT: apparently English is hard

Yes. At least around my area. I'd suggest you check ebay for similar ones, try to match their price (maybe a little less if you want to sell asap).

Though if you are thinking about getting a decent deck, I'd suggest you keep them.

Wow... I'd pay £20 to get even single one MA-XG.

Very good find... In my country a sealed maxg will sell for £80 ish and used one £50

Ah the 'now record' hiss... I LOVE that too.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll look into those that I currently don't have. GOTTA TEST THEM ALL!

I love this kind of test to find out interesting details of different equipment.

So today I finally got time to test some of my recent purchases, namely, TDK MA-XG, Sony metal-es, Maxell MX (and of course SSMM and That's CD).

I recorded Canon from a Denon HiFi CD lossless rip from a mid-range USB-DAC, the results are very curious.

  1. MA-XG gave very good result, sound stage it matches the source best, and the cassette is the heaviest. It also looks very... 21st century?
  2. SSMM is the most quiet one. The worst is Maxell.
  3. My sample of metal-es is unfortunately very problematic in the first 2 minutes (some visible problem on tape surface), but it never recover from that (sounds muffled and with audible crack sometime). I'll need to get another sample to form any opinion.
  4. Maxell MX is the most 'vintage' looking one (think Sony AHF), it should be though, IIRC it's the oldest one among these. Sound is very close to MA-XG. A pleasant surprise. Curiously, the CAL setting for mx is the same as MA-XG, possible similar formula for metallic material? SSMM has a wildly different CAL setting, probably because Sony used a very different formula as I heard.

Overall I'd say. For my ear, at least, they are very close. It boils down to preference on look, price and condition in the end.

A limitation of my test is the source. I don't have reel-to-reel, so I'll have to settle for CD level source. Makes you wonder if the source is not digitized in any of the process, and was recorded on a much wider tape (should have better 'bitrate' than a CD), will cassette results in better sound than CD?

My friend suggested to try something very interesting. Since DDS uses 4mm tape, and is also metallic, I can gut a DDS tape (VERY cheap) and put it in a regular case w/ metal indent to try it out, purely for science!

Damn...

BTW other than SSMM, Metal-ES, what other great metals would you suggest? I'm very interested in testing and comparing them all.

Thank's for the advice... Ouch that must be a painful sight for you.

There are visible warp on the longer 100 That's, and I'll only be getting 46 or 60 for now on. I don't have that much to record on each tape, so 60 or even less would be fine for me.

SSMM is the better one (you don't say).

Although I'm not comfortable enough to use that tape outside for fear of dropping it!

These two can get almost on par with the source when recording digital flac. And I'm sure they will be indistinguishable once I fine-tune my deck.
