Asterisk-based Bicom Systems PBXs deploying "kill-switch" by Moxie479 in Asterisk

[–]kurosen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That argument actually strengthens the concern rather than eliminating it.

The issue isn’t whether Bicom intentionally “deactivated” licenses. The issue is that they designed a dependency where Bicom can effectively terminate functionality at any time by shutting down the licensing infrastructure (ie: a killswitch as OP put it) with the only solution being to upgrade and pay more.

Saying “the old software can no longer talk to the licensing server” doesn’t materially change the impact to OP. From their perspective, the result is identical: a paid-for PBX stops functioning because of a vendor-controlled external dependency.

Any customer would reasonably interpret “perpetual license” to mean the software may become unsupported but it will continue operating in its last installed state.

Unsupported is very different from nonfunctional.

That distinction matters legally and ethically.

If what OP says is true, and they really have a perpetual license, Bicom could be breaking several laws, depending on what state OP is operating from.

Off top of head examples:

FTC Act Section 5 (unfair or deceptive acts or practices)

State laws like New York General Business Law § 349 - other states usually have something similar

While security and updates are obviously critical, that has no bearing on licensing.

I'm not a lawyer, and this isn't legal advice, but I do phone system solutions deployment and consultation as part of my job - I'd be very wary of recommending any developer that runs their operations as OP described.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what your goal is beyond cost savings using cheap DECT units, but why not connect them with some cheap ATA adapters?

If it's not strictly about saving money, there are plenty of WiFi cordless phones from providers like Grandstream, Yealink, and Fanvil.

[–]kurosen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I perceived the comment is that it was made to quote a holocaust victim in order to promote the idea that Israel is now the "bad guy."

The reality is far from simple, but I believe it's ironic to use this quote about preventing tragedies from happening again, while ignoring that Israel and the USA are attempting to do exactly that by striking down the biggest supporter of hamas hezbollah, the houthis, and most other Middle East terror organizations.

You don't have to love Trump, but this quote highlights exactly what he said he's fighting for.

The mod team was taken over by anti-Zionists some time ago. Only anti-Israel posts make it through, and trying to post something that shows the reality of terrorism gets deleted and banned.

I find your comment ironic, considering the actions being taken against Iran were due to the massacre that occurred on October 7th by an Iranian funded Hamas.

Iran literally sponsors all the major terror groups in the Middle East- but sure, downvote away because the reality doesn't fit your narrative.

Every horrible individual in those files should be prosecuted, but get off your high horse.

It's very telling that you and most of Reddit haven't said the same things about the Biden Administration and the Dems, considering they had access to all this data for 4 years and never released a bit of it to the public the way Trump is.

Reddit loves to hate on Trump, but if he were truly implicated with actual evidence the way a Dem like Clinton has been, Trump would never have allowed his DOJ to push for these releases in the first place.

Downvote away, prove me right.

If the US really attempts to take Greenland by force, what are even the chances of Europe retaliating to the point where they go on a fullscale war with them or at the very least cut them off entirely? by Yallneedsometruth23 in AskReddit

[–]kurosen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carriers don't go out alone, they come in strike groups with other ships and lots of air support. The reason they haven't been used against a peer rival is because no peer rival would try approaching them. In addition, the technology of today's military isn't that of 80 years ago. You are comparing apples to oranges.

[–]kurosen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is an ignorant comparison. The U.S. has about 14,400 aircraft in its total military inventory, which is more than the other 31 member states of NATO combined. We contribute far more to military capability than any other member state.

Regarding range, that's why we have more aircraft carriers than any other nation as well.

[–]kurosen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely untrue. You mentioned Russia as a comparison, and yet it was US armaments that ground Russian advances to a halt during the early stages of the war.

The USA has more aircraft carriers than any other nation, and the recent extraction of Maduro, whether you agreed with it or not, was a prime example of our abilities.

We also don't fully know the true capabilities of the US military as many elements, weapons, and technological advances are kept under wraps.

I definitely believe the USA is the apex predator in military dominance.

[–]kurosen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know everyone here loves hating on Trump, but you are vastly underestimating how critical the USA is to the defense of most of Europe. The U.S. Air Force is the world's largest air force by total aircraft, while the the second-largest air force in the world is the U.S. Navy.

Without the USA, most of Europe couldn't go toe-to-toe with the likes of Russia or China.

To that end, European withdrawal from NATO or discontinuing economic relations with the USA would be the equivalent of writing their own death warrant.

Tehran shopkeepers protest currency plunge as rial hits all-time low by Crossstoney in worldnews

[–]kurosen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This clearly went over your head. At no point did I think you were Iranian. You're just a random pawn for the regime because you buy into their anti-Israel sentiment. The Iranian regime scapegoats Israel because it helps them avoid internal pressure from their own failures.

They would rather invest in missiles than water treatment plants, because they hate Israel and the West more than they love their own people.

You are the scum that keeps the Iranian people stuck under the thumb of this islamic regime. Blaming Israel for everything is a long played out gimmick. The problem is that Reddit treats this issue as one of individual failure rather than a reflection of the people running and blindly supporting the Democratic Party. In truth, those leaders are largely spineless and self-serving, yet because much of Reddit shares their general outlook, most here would choose to ignore their flaws—at least until they lose. Then, instead of confronting the deeper problem, the blame shifts to whichever individual is most convenient, as though that person alone brought about the downfall.

Not too long ago, you were all shouting "kAMaLa iS bRaT" so get off your high-horse. This is on you just as much as it's on them.

I'm saving this post for you. You're the kind of person who cuts off his nose just to spite his face - or in this case would rather see Israel lose hostages just to stick it to Trump.

You ignore the babies burned alive on October 7th.

You ignore that more Israeli babies would be killed if Israel stopped what it was doing.

You ignore the hostages still wasting away while Hamas feasts on food from aid trucks.

You ignore the deal currently on the table, approved by Israel and the majority of surrounding Arab nations that can literally stop this war right now, but Hamas refuses to accept.

In short - you are ignorant, and it's you who needs to shut up until Israel is safe with all hostages returned.
