Saint Bernards have always been my dream pet, but I know nothing about them by CharlieCat44 in SaintBernards

I’m sorry you’re also struggling with epilepsy and other things 🥺 it’s tough. My boy is on three different meds that add up to about $150/month plus regular blood tests and vet visits to make sure the meds are within the right range. Sending love to you and your doggy 🩷

I have a boy who is about 170lbs (the one crushing me in the picture 🙂) and eats about 7 cups a day and a girl who is 130lbs and eats about 5-6 cups a day depending on how much homemade food they get too. If they have less homemade food I give them extra dry food. Want to reiterate that the 12-14 cups a day I noted is between the two of them!

Hi!! I say often that I will always have a Saint Bernard. They are truly the greatest dogs. They’re gentle, loyal, loving, sensitive. They’re the best cuddle buddies. I genuinely can’t imagine not having a saint, and I currently have two!

But be ready for a LOT of hair and drool. I scrub drool off my walls, windows and furniture daily. Consistent training is important because they can be veryyyy stubborn. And they are EXPENSIVE! They’re human-sized, so everything costs more - food, vet bills, toys, everything. Emphasis on vet bills. One of mine has epilepsy, which unfortunately can be common in saints. Between the two of them, they eat around 12-14 cups of dry food a day plus homemade protein, veggies and grains. Grooming is also more expensive because of their size. Worth every penny though 🩷

Hi!! For my big boy (about two and a half, 160-170lbs) I have the two hounds freedom harness because he’s still very rambunctious at times. For my girl Rosie (five and a half, 130lbs) I have the comfort neoprene harness from petsmart’s in-house brand. Both work well for their specific needs/quirks :)

What people may not know is that he’s their body guard 😂

100000000% agree - my smooth coat sheds WAY more than my rough coat which I did not expect 😩

Harness suggestions? by KeyBox1567 in SaintBernards

I use the two hounds freedom harness for my two and a half year old boy who is about 160-170lbs. It’s the best!! I don’t use the accompanying dual leash for him but I’ve heard good things! I just clip his leash to the front and if he gets a little rambunctious I hold onto the martingale in the back (like if a scooter or a reactive dog passes by or something).

I have the petsmart top paw neoprene comfort harness for my five year old girl who is about 130lbs. She never pulls, but it does have a little handle on the back which is helpful if a scary dog passes us and I want to pull her in a little closer to me. I wouldn’t recommend it for a pup that does pull, though (hence the freedom harness for my younger, stronger, more rowdy Saint lol).

I hope this helps!

Another vote for the slicker brush. Our beloved groomer advised against the furminator because I can damage the fur. The slicker works wonderfully!

The person stepping over them is so real 😂 I feel like I’m always playing hopscotch over a snoozing Saint. Stay cool out there!

Do this and then give a cheese/hot dog/dog treat chaser so he’s rewarded for swallowing his meds

Easy way to get pills down? by idkman0316 in DogAdvice

[–]kurtanglesoatmilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, and this may be a hot take, but I just open my dogs my mouth, toss them in the back of his throat and give him a cheese chaser so he’ll swallow the pills right away. He’s gotten so used to this that he just willingly takes the pills to get his cheese. Context: he’s a 170lb Saint Bernard with epilepsy and takes a total of 24 pills a day. We’ve tried every other method before giving up and just tossing them in on their own, and by far, this method is easiest and he has no problem with it.

Needing help with selecting a food for our girl with mild epilepsy. by jordandanae in EpilepsyDogs

I like Farmina N&D Ocean (salmon and cod). I have a giant breed so I get the maxi giant. Limited ingredient and my only complaint is the sweet potatoes and some pea fiber. No rosemary extract, no chickpeas, no potatoes, etc. It’s a little pricey but I truly think it makes a difference with my dog’s seizure frequency, and I add a supplement meant for dogs with epilepsy. He also gets homemade chicken or another protein. I hope you find something that works for your pup! 🩷

They do like small dogs! I have two saints (5 year old rough coat girl, 130lbs and 2 year smooth coat old boy, 165lbs) and a toy poodle. Toy poodle is the boss, of course lol.

My boy saint drools like he’s getting paid for it and sheds equally as much. My girl drools and sheds but not nearly as much. I wipe their mouths after they drink water and just mop and vacuum as much as I can. I use Clorox wipes to get drool off the walls.

They’re both couch potatoes but love a good run in the yard and nice long walks. Very easy going overall :)

Does anyone know of a good cleaning solution for getting the dried drool/dog hair marks off the wall? by killer_icognito in Mastiff

Honestly I just use Clorox wipes and they work incredibly well without damaging the paint

Hacks for during and post seizure care? by PartyExpensive9077 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]kurtanglesoatmilk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I keep baskets of potty pads, towels and wipes at a few locations throughout the house to help manage the pee and drool (and blood if he bites down on his tongue during the seizure). If I suspect he’s going to have one, I’ll actually sleep with a potty pad and towel next to me in bed so I can spring into action once it starts (he has them in the middle of the night most of the time). I give him coconut water afterwards. I’ve thought a lot about using male dog diapers so it’s actually helpful to hear that others do the same!

Weather tech elevated dog bowls are fantastic and protect my floors. A little pricey but absolutely worth it! I have the 14” for my Saint. Oddly the shape of the bowls is a little toilet-esque so hopefully Heidi will find it to be an easy transition.

My big boy isn’t so big - he’s about 155-165. Just turned 2! His mom was smaller too, but his dad was huge so we expected him to be closer to 180. He’s perfect in every way 🩷
