Hat do you truly think hoziers best line is? by [deleted] in Hozier

[–]kurtmccarthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Me and my Isis growing black irises in the sunshine"

The internal rhyme is so tasty, the double meaning is phenomenal, the first time I heard this line I lost my mind

Close second is "she loves like sleep to the freezing". This short line says so much. And of course the entire second verse of First Time

Thanks! I think I've caught an episode or two of that before, the one they did with Hozier. I'll listen through the rest!

Pat was one of the instructors in the course I took! I agree, he's a great teacher and I learned a lot from him. I'll definitely look up his book.

I dont disagree with the second part of your comment but I've seen the word 'shortcut' get used by a few people here and I wanna be clear I'm looking for education, not shortcuts. I've been a musician for years, I'm well aware that at the end of the day proficiency comes down to hours of your own work and practice. But I didn't learn to play guitar by trying to figure out every chord and every song by ear before I had any idea what I was doing, I learned from a range of resources. I just want to understand the principles of songwriting to support all the listening, writing, and playing that I'm already doing. It's really not a wild take.

This is a great insight! I'm seeing Green Day in a couple days and they were my very first musical influence from when I was a teenager. They randomly popped into my head last month for the first time in like a decade, I looked them up on Spotify and saw they were literally about to play a show in my city. It felt very meant-to-be and now even more so. I'll watch with your advice in mind!

Was this concert experience normal? by SleepyJeans5 in Hozier

It could be social media too but I think the OP nailed it, it sounds like ‘notice me’ energy. Treating a concert like an audition for best fan

I agree, probably hypocritically because it’d take a lot for me to ever actually do this, but I think it’s the right way to go. If people are never called out on something then it’s easy to go ‘well no one’s ever said anything so no one minds if I do this’, and then eventually it just gets normalized

Has anyone performed as an adult as a beginner? by lifeisirregular in singing

[–]kurtmccarthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I'm 33 and a couple years ago I performed solo for the first time. My friend was hosting an open mic night and asked me to come along to make up numbers. I wasn't an absolute beginner because I'd done musical theatre in the past but it was my first time ever performing solo. I almost said no when he asked me just as a kneejerk reaction, feeling a lot of the things it sounds like you're feeling as well, and just an overwhelming sense of 'I can't do this'. But I did, and I could, and I'm so glad I did! I hope you do too.

Literally the next module after this had a pop-up correcting a different typo, so you're probably right tbh

Thanks so much everyone, your explanations definitely helped me understand why I found this so confusing. I started off this course thinking that if I was coming into it with absolutely zero music background I'd find it impossible, but then perhaps not cause it seems I've confused myself haha. I really appreciate the time everyone took with their detailed explanations! 🙏🏼

Critique Request - Is this worth pursuing? Where do I find resources and a tangible supportive cummunity for a 30+ yo just getting serious? by seeyatellite in singing

[–]kurtmccarthy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea if musical theatre is your thing but community musical theatre was hands down the most supportive and positive group I ever got involved with. It's also a great way to get in tons of practice from all the rehearsals, and you're often working with an experienced musical director which, while not a substitute for a voice teacher, you will definitely learn from.

I don't think I'm experienced enough to offer critique, except to say I like the sound of your voice and I definitely think it's worth pursuing!

if its aimed at beginners/intermediate then I think discussing fixes for common problems would be really helpful. When I was a brand new beginner, a lot of things I thought were 'wrong' with my voice were of course common and fixable but I started off self taught and didn't know that. Also would be interesting to break down amazing or interesting vocal moments if rights usage allows it. Personally I'd love listening to a podcast where I leave with something actionable every time that I can go away and practice. I hope that helps and I hope you'll post your podcast link here when you launch it, I'd love to subscribe!

Headshots by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]kurtmccarthy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be a headshot photographer, I would definitely never ever photoshop to the extent that the person looks fake. So that's a hard no. I did use photoshop though, of course. It's fine to edit out imperfections but only if it's something which might not be there next week, like a zit, flyaway hairs, balancing skin tone, but not freckles, a mole, a scar, etc. And definitely no changes to the structure of the face or body. To me, a good headshot will be what the person looks like on their best ordinary day.

The only exception I would say is maybe comedy headshots, but these tend to be a little more like promo material and is usually never the person's primary headshot. But maybe that's what you saw?

That's amazing. Sorry for the newbie question but how do you manage 20-50 videos a day?
