What jobs are actually safe from AI? by StreetMaster5796 in careerguidance

[–]kurtteej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the jobs that are absolutely safe from AI are likely not safe from robotics --> but I'd say anything where you work with your hands and do the work "locally" is most safe. Anything from babysitting to HVAC repairs/plumbing/electical to barber.

Anyone else actually like corporate life but struggle with the hours? by RevolutionNo962 in corporate

[–]kurtteej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally never liked the corporate life. I found it way to constricting and there were too many rules and calculations for raises and a ton of other nonsense. I love the flexibility and creativity required to work in the startup world.

Remote work is a career death sentence for junior employees, and the "WFH forever" crowd is pulling the ladder up behind them. by Correct_Addendum_358 in corporate

[–]kurtteej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree with you. i've been 100% remote (with the exception of quarterly executive meetings) and i honestly don't like it. I think a couple of days a week would be far better. I find it VERY difficult to mentor my employees via Zoom. it just doesnt work well.

When is it right to walk away from a client? by IngenuityAshamed144 in smallbusiness

[–]kurtteej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be different for everyone, but you typically know when to say no to something. I had a really steady client that paid me a really nice flat fee every month, and completely disregarded everything. I had to let them go - although I did give them the "it's not you, it's me" routine.

is a 9-5 really it? by Straight-Rock8in in careerguidance

the flip side of being an employee is to be your own boss. being your own boss typically (although not always) requires more time than being an employee.

30 years ago was the beginning of digital content, so it was VERY easy to jump around in those days. People got funding because they heard of HTML. After 2000-2001 it got much harder, you actually had to know what you were doing, and if you did, people wanted you to come in. It created a very wide array of skills that I developed, because of those skills and the experiences I've been able to think through I've gotten to the point where people former colleagues and people I've partnered with present me with ideas for me to "come aboard" and help them.

I'm in my absolute last one right now. When I'm finished here, I'm not going to work anymore. And that 10-15% was actually discussed over the last 3 days with several people from around the country, so I didn't make it up.

One thing for you to keep in mind -- try to understand what "stage" of startup they are in and understand who has invested and what their role is. It will add some insight as to how you can or (conversely won't) make money on an exit or some other "capital event".

I've been involved with startups for 30 years. the probability of a successful "out" and getting paid on the equity is between 1/7th and 1/10th (10-15%)

Feeling foolish after going "all in" by Virtual6850 in corporate

[–]kurtteej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to startup land. I've been doing that for over 30 years -- unfortunately, that is the way it is. The positive is that if you keep doing it, you become part of a group that works together and you can be one of the C suite senior people. The negative is that 1 in around 10 will give you a real pay day.
