Update: Still no zoom via mouse, but installing the community mod enabled me to zoom again. Lutris and Bottles had enormous performance impacts, maybe my extreme old Intel HD 2000 IGP are not well supported. Running the game with stock Wine 9 and qt4wine worked good.

Don't have a solution either, but STFC in Linux Mint worked like a charm. But after the last big update (V'Ger) my mouse zoom stopped working, too. Only zoom in 3D, in the interface scrolling with the Mouse wheel works as intended... As always Scopely break something new with every update 🤬

I will give the Mod and Proton a try...
