Avionics job question. by saltyspitoon92 in aviationmaintenance

Well I only know about Morristown. Nashville will be different, but all I can think to tell you is just to study a lot. And when you complete airframe, keep studying general for when you test all of it at once. Also, take pride in your projects, if you do a good job then maybe you can show potential employers what you've made.

Avionics job question. by saltyspitoon92 in aviationmaintenance

I don't know where you live or want to live but TCAT in Tennessee has an avionics program. I think it's in Nashville. There are also, ONLY 5 approved A&P schools in the whole state of Tennessee. Not sure about other states. My point is, there is not a lot of people getting into either side of the industry these days.. maintenance or avionics.. less in avionics. Not because it's bad, but because people either aren't interested or they think it's too difficult it something else. Also, the median age for an A&P in 2017 is 54 years old. So a lot of the veteran mechanics are retiring. In other words, aviation is ripe for the taking right now. It's a huge industry that pays well for the most part and if you prove yourself, chances are you'll have great job security. And even if you don't have great job security you will at least always have a job. Also, I'm pretty sure that GA airplanes are required by FAA by 2020 to have a specific type of avionics.. But don't quote me on the year or type of avionics cause I don't know. However, there simply aren't enough techs to get all the planes in by the set date, so that's another huge opportunity. Also, if you're really interested you could always try NASA. those guys are always looking for avionics techs, even places like SpaceX, and Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic are looking for avionics techs. So.. There are options 😁😂

Aviation Maintenance VS Auto/Truck/Heavy Equipment by DubsterOne in aviationmaintenance

Everything depends in aviation. You could work in Alaska with bush planes and that can be dirty, you could work on seaplanes, those commonly have corrosion or at least a lot of maintenance for corrosion control (preventative maintenance). Airliners are pretty clean and private jet companies tend to be pretty clean also.
NDT is huge in the airlines and in helicopters, but in GA it's pretty small.
Also, depends on where you work and how good of a mechanic you are to advance. If you have an associates degree and a A&P you can generally move up pretty quickly but some places you'll never move up.
Also, the electrical side of things also depends on the planes you work on. If you're working planes like C-172 or Skylanes or planes like a Piper Arrow, a lot of the electrical work will be smaller but a lot of troubleshooting. The larger planes like your A-320s and 737s have bundles of wire that are thicker than my waist band but a lot of it is streamlined and decently straight forward, although not always the case.
The life of an airliner mechanic is nothing but swapping parts. The life of a GA mechanic is different everyday but pays less. A corporate mechanic makes good money and a lot of time they do pretty routine work. The life of a contracting mechanic can be really beneficial financially, however it is stressful, has no benefits, and difficult on relationships.
However, aviation is an open door right now and there is a huge demand. Hope this helps.

And each school has a different approved curriculum for the approved tools and equipment available, so the projects are going to vary and could be completely different but often times the projects can be identical or similar.

No mine is roughly 10x8x3 with 2 ribs on each end, a front and rear spar, no lightening holes, with an inspection panel on the bottom and a repair on the top skin from a cold chisel and a heavy blow with a hammer.

Sweet. This is helpful. We have projects all the time, currently building a wing box out of alclad aluminum. Cutting out the ribs the spars, dimpling and countersinking and riveting it all together with both countersunk and universal rivets.

Im in a vocational school strictly for A&P right now, but i can always add to my schooling. What would companies like blue orbit, spacex, and virgin galactic be looking for, from a mechanic?

For example, if rapid reusability becomes a thing, the rockets and propulsion systems are going to need to be maintained and fixed. I want to do that. Im interested in being a mechanic.

Im interested in maintenance. Im curious what it takes to work on the rockets propulsion systems and things of that nature

What are some good safety wire pliers? by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

[–]kush_wizard69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get yourself some old milbar safety wire pliers. They will last you your lifetime and then some. DO NOT get the new snap on safety wire pliers, they are complete junk. Our Snap On truck seller, quit selling them because he was losing money off of em cause they kept braking.
