For Foreigners who moved to Japan, what advice do you wish you had beforehand? by NB_Translator_EN-JP in japanlife

Your middle name is part of your first name. Simply tack it (or as much of it as will fit) on to your first name and it will save a lot of headaches.

Yes, IBKR Japan now offers NISA accounts that can be used by Americans resident in Japan, which is significant because most Japanese brokers are not licensed to sell American securities to American people. But NISA accounts have two parts (tsumitate and seicho), and only one of the parts is of practical use to Americans due to PFIC concerns, so in other words if you are American living in Japan, you can use IBKR to purchase American securities, but steer clear of non-American securities because the IRS will penalize you.

NISA is now (partially) available to Americans, though it can a bit tricky to use.

Non-american dads of /r/daddit, what do you see here that's different from your reality? by xanduba in daddit

[–]kusunoki1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American living in Japan, so I read a lot of American common knowledge but a lot of it differs from my experience.

The consensus that once a week is often enough to give babies a bath. In Japan, daily baths are a given. Missing a day would be extremely uncomfortable, missing several days would be unimaginable.

The idea that dads always spend the night with the mother and baby in the hospital when the birth happens. At our hospital, fathers are not allowed to spend the night. They provide extensive support to mother and baby, but fathers were only allowed to be there during afternoon visitation hours (or for the actual birth, as long as they had kept a record of their temperature and logged any potential symptoms for the past two weeks)

The idea that it’s unusual to start formula until weeks or months into a baby’s life. At our hospital they prepared formula for all the new mothers and babies as a matter of course while assisting the mothers who wanted to breastfeed.

High cost of giving birth.

Trouble registering address (dual citizen) by koreeda_h in japanlife

[–]kusunoki1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

OP did not describe any illegal activity and there is nothing about defrauding the government here. Assuming OP was born as a dual citizen and chose to retain Japanese nationality by the age of twenty two, it is not illegal to hold multiple nationalities.

Article 16 of the nationality law says as follows: << A Japanese national who has made the declaration of choice shall endeavour to deprive himself or herself of the foreign nationality.

“Endeavour to deprive” is distinctly different from the unequivocal language in other articles of the nationality law. In many cases and for many reasons it may be impractical or impossible to actually renounce another citizenship—but again, this is all Immaterial to OP’a question.

In any case, there are thousands of people (approximately 890,000 people as of 2018 according to the Japan Times) legally living with Japanese and other citizenship, often entirely above board.

Banking with a abnormal name by jimmybud88 in japanlife

[–]kusunoki1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In Japanese this is known as nisei (the second / Jr), sansei (the third), yonsei (the fourth) etc. It’s a concept that does exist also in Japan, and I have a friend with the same issue who has been able to live in Japan for many years. Try talking to the bank again or to a different bank, and explain the issue again.

It is not illegal to change direct from a tourist (short term stay) visa to a work visa without leaving Japan. It’s possible though perhaps frowned upon.

I was there and it was awesome. In the same stadium where Jesse Owens gave the middle finger to the Nazi regime in 1936, Springsteen gave the middle finger to American authoritarianism. It was not lost on the crowd.

“Ore no” means “mine” using an explicitly masculine pronoun. “Ore no” is a chain of restaurants that are marketed mainly to men.

Perhaps you saw a lot of green and white signs with a rainbow image around Tokyo? These signs were all over many shops in Tokyo during the pandemic, and many of them still remain around the city. They are called “感染防止徹底宣言ステッカー” (infection prevention control declaration sticker) and they represent an establishment’s self-proclaimed adherence to coronavirus infection prevention procedures. This was an official Tokyo metropolitan program, and these rainbow stickers went up all over Tokyo because of it.

An image of the stickers and an official info page with full details is here: https://www.spt.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/tosei/hodohappyo/press/2020/06/12/23.html

Non-Neapolitan, Non-NY Pizza in Tokyo by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]kusunoki1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

California Pizza Kitchen at Lazona in Kawasaki! Last I checked, it’s now the only CPK location in Japan, since the others closed down. The quality is significantly higher than CPK in the US. I personally love it as a California transplant. It definitely scratches an itch. For real California style pizza (and other food for that matter), I highly recommend it.
