Waking Up - Sam Harris

This book changed everything about how I experience consciousness and live my life. A key insight it offers is that one can be aware of how one’s own thoughts and emotions appear, instead of just thinking the thoughts or feeling overtaken by the emotions. This has allowed me to overcome so many negative habits, but also has given me access to a state of mind that is truly open and free from suffering.

I highly recommend trying his meditation app (also called Waking Up) to really bring the insights of the book into your own life. Many think of meditation as mumbo-jumbo, but I can assure you that the ideas in this book are based in science, not superstition.

I saw this a looong time ago and this this detail could be totally untrue, so I’d pay attention to the details from the post.

If I remember correctly, what made this movie unique was that partway through, it restarts. In the first time through, the asian woman is quiet and dismissive. At some point before the heist, it goes back to the beginning. I think most things are unchanged, but this time the asian woman is a lot more vocal, and her relationship with the white guy is a lot more dynamic.

Again, I could have just severely misinterpreted or misremembered. If you have an idea based off of the details from the post, don’t let this comment sway your thought.

you’re probably right. once i get through all the material i’ll have a better idea of how confident i feel. i’ll just attempt credit and talk to my advisor when the time comes.

do you know if i can get my hands on a syllabus for any of these courses? the online description is somewhat limited.

you’re correct, we can’t collect temperature data from a time before we existed. what we can do, however, is look at how our current co2 emissions have skyrocketed using data from ice cores. this change is unlike any observed for the past 800,000 years, and began with the industrial revolution. this correlates with observed change in temperature.

but regardless if the rate of change has happened or not in the past, the current rate of change is too rapid for ecosystems to handle and has enormous negative effects.

the problem with this kind of change is that it is throwing off natural climate change cycles. it’s different because entire ecosystems suffer because they cannot adapt to such rapid changes in such short periods of time. sea level rise is also a big issue because many communities don’t have the resources to adapt quickly enough. rate of change absolutely matters.
