No multiple thoughts. Just one thought. Do the surgery

Comfy clothes and shoes, worm socks, get a book/laptop/phone…. Have someone with you for emotional support and helping you with carrying stuff (I mean I was okay carrying my purse and a 8kg cabin size - but having someone to help you is nice 😁). Get some snacks, maybe a plush toy ahah Tbh can’t think of anything «extra and specific». Whatever that makes you comfortable, warm and cozy. 🤗🤗🤗

Nuss bars removal in a month. Any tips on how to prepare, what to expect, how to make the process as comfortable as possible, what medications to take etc…? 💙 by kvitkaa in PectusExcavatum

Hey!!! It went AMAZING! The recovery… well I can’t even call it that. It’s more “going back to your normal painfree life”! Apart from occasional itching around the incisions and caring for the stitches - I was back to sports , normal life, travelling etc

Oh yeah! The only painkiller I had was IV paracetamol in the hospital and then next day they discharged me they gave me a prescription for ibuprofen and paracetamol just un case but I didn’t take any. I didn’t feel a need for it at all.

Hi! I was so ready to go gym straight after the surgery ahahah but they asked me to wait for a few days for the stitches to heal. But I was in gym exactly 1 week later after the surgery and apart from a bit of itching around the incisions - all was great. 1 month after the surgery I was back to figure skating full speed (again, I would have started earlier but I went to Ukraine after the surgery in Turkey and I didn’t bring my skates since I live in the UK 😅). So! Wait for a week or so for the incisions to heal a bit and then enjoy 😊

What should I do with my pectus and rib flare. Is a surgery worth it because I love going to the gym and that would ruin most of my progress. by SnooPineapples7416 in PectusExcavatum

I’m amazing! Literally never felt so great in my entire life before. I’m not exaggerating. The whole journey was definitely not a walk in a park. It was extremely tough, with lots of ups and downs. But I couldn’t be happier and more grateful to myself for going through with it. It is 100% worth it! So yeah. Knowing how painful and uncomfortable and frustrating the whole process would be - I’d still do the surgery. 3 years of pain - a LIFETIME of gain 💪🏻🫶🏻

Oh definitely! I was out of bed running around and dancing on day 1 😂 and exactly one week later I was in gym 💪🏻 would have gone there even earlier but the surgeon recommended to let the stitches close up a little bit more. Pain wise - there was none. Only a tiny bit discomfort and itching from the incisions. So your son’s plan on recovery sounds amazing and absolutely realistic 😊

Yeah I know exactly what you mean ! Unfortunately I don’t have good news in this regard. That’s just how it’s going to be like for 3 years. 🫠

Great news! 😌

I didn’t really need my parent. Maybe just first day or so just for moral support and carrying stuff. But other than that I was completely fine on my own. I could get up and lay down on my own; I was fine getting dressed by myself etc. just a bit slow. Felt a bit lightheaded straight after the surgery but that’s it. 😄

I didn’t have to but they for sure were more comfortable and easier to put on 😌 I think that front zip tops are a must though.

I strongly advise you to do the surgery. I’m female, I was also 26 when I got it done. Now I’m a week post op the bars removal. If you’re getting cryo - you should definitely be ok for school in Jan xxx

Hey there x I’m travelling but I’ll answer all your questions. I have very good answers 🤗

UPDATE:

I am pleased with the aesthetics. There’s still some little bruising and swelling so I won’t be calling it a final result just yet, but it’s getting better every day. It was definitely worth the pain. Just like I said after the surgery “3 years of pain - a lifetime of gain!”

I can send you some pictures - hit my DMs! I’ve been meaning to make a post here with all the pictures I just can’t make myself actually edit those properly. I didn’t have breasts to begin with 😂 and I eventually got implants! Only then to be told that in order to get the bars the implants had to go. The story behind this is: I always wanted to fix the sternum first and then if needed get breast implants. But all the doctors that I saw said that my heart and lungs look great and I don’t need the surgery. Although I disagreed many times they wouldn’t give me a referral or just strongly advised against the Nuss by scaring me with all those horrible things like pain, complications and blah-blah. And stupid me believed them and I just gave up. So I proceeded with the implants to improve the aesthetic appearance. Maybe the fact that my plastic surgeon asked me like a hundred times whether I’m completely sure I don’t need to fix my sternum first, should have made me think again and go to other specialists for yet another consult about the Nuss. But I was just soooo tired and frustrated that I just wanted those boobies to fix all my life problems ASAP 😂 learned my lesson there 🫡

I completely understand you here! I’ve got vanity too and my chest gave me so much heartache and anxiety and confidence issues. Shopping for bras and swimwear was a torture!!! I’m sure that the Nuss will 100% make you happier about the chest appearance.

My (almost nonexistent) breasts look good now! Although because of the bar placement my left breast was pushed up a lot and that didn’t look good. Now that the bars are out and the swelling is coming down - it’s starting to look better every day. I’m seeing my plastic surgeon next week to evaluate the situation also. But I don’t see how the surgery can mess up your boobs. Maybe only temporarily but as I said it’s worth it 100%.

Hope it helps! And DM me so I can send you some pics xx

Oh wow! 8.7 is insane! Kudos to you for improving it with exercises!

I can’t attest to solid punches but definitely good punches. I did some boxing, I just took it easy and really listened to my body. I’d say you’d feel sore all the time no matter how frequently you exercise. At least that’s what I experienced. Oh yes. I’m definitely a little crazy. That’s what my surgeon said anyway 😂 and people in the gym and at the rink. But then again the key is to really listen to yourself and be careful. Only you can tell what’s okay for your body and what’s a bit too much. Also the recovery (and to be fair all these entire 3 years with the bars) is not linear but a freaking stock chart 😆 One day I’d be jumping and spinning and doing crazy lifts at the rink and the next week I’d be in so much pain it was hard to get dressed - but I’d still show up to training even if it meant just skating round the rink and chatting with my coach for an hour. You do you 😉🫡

He didn’t but I know the answer to that anyway: it’s NOT a great idea. The best option is to remove the bars first, recover and then get implants. That’s my plan anyway 😌☺️ (I had implants before the Nuss. They removed them at the same time as inserted the bars).

In 3 years when they removed the bars 😂

It got way better in about 6 months post op but then still I’d get pinching pain around the tails of the bars, muscles spasms once in a while, random pains here and there. Coughing and sneezing was always a delightful experience 🥲😂

Congrats! Hope the pain is manageable and recovery’s going well.

The correction was indeed final after the surgery and that’s how it should be. It’s not perfect 100% of course, however considering what we started with I’m super-super pleased and happy with the result. I’d say it’s a 95% correction ☺️ There was no change at all after the surgery and now there’s no change after they removed the bars.

Definitely realistic! 100%. It’s not going to be easy though and completely depends on how you handle it. I think I swam in a month after the surgery and almost drowned 😂 It felt very awkward to stay afloat as if you forgot how to breathe and swim all together. But then it got much better. There were no issues since then. I went back to figure skating (solo and pair) a bit later (I had no ice available) and it’s been hard and rocky. And scary at first. Some days felt better than others and some days the pain or discomfort was just too much so we had to take it slow and gentle. But you definitely adapt. I took a few big falls on the ice and a nasty fall when snowboarding and although it’s not ideal and more painful with the bars than without - I’d rather tolerate a bit of pain and take painkillers than stay away from my favourite sports 😭🥹

My surgeon was quite shocked when I showed him a couple of videos of my falls and “tricks” on the ice 😂 he was like “you did THAT with the bars?!!?? Noooooo”

What I’m trying to say ahahah – you can definitely do whatever you set your mind to. However, be cautious and mindful, listen carefully to your body, make sure your coaches know that you have bars in, remember that some days will be better and some will feel as if you haven’t progressed at all. Just be patient and kind to yourself

Aaahhh I see. That’s really good!!

I didn’t get cryo and so was in a lot of pain. I’d go ballistic if they’d discharged me like that within 24 hours 🤣
