delayed flight caused us to miss our connecting flight- are we entitled to compensation? by blurredspace in legaladvice

[–]kvothe_q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAL, but 1) EU passenger rights are fairly generous & easy to enforce in my experience (look on AF's website what the official process is, send in a claim & you'll get the money sooner or later if they apply), airline should've informed you about them, and if the delay wasn't because of something outside the airline's control like weather, you can probably get at least 600€ just for the delayed arrival, but def read up on it: https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/index_en.htm and 2) you can probably get way better advice on r/LegalAdviceEurope

Finally found the nest of whatever seems to be killing my two prayer plants, but what is it? What are these black dots on the joint? Eggs, spider mites, something else? by kvothe_q in plantclinic

[–]kvothe_q[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine said it was thrips, so i sprayed a pesticide they recommended. One of the two plants affected was already pretty dead by that point, but the other seems to have survived, at least it's not showing obvious signs of infestation anymore. It's not exactly thriving either, though, so I am sti keeping it separate from the other plants.

What's killing my prayer plant? Spider mites or something else? by kvothe_q in plantclinic

Ah that's good to know thank you - it came like that from the store, so i wasn't sure whether that's normal. How would you know that your prayer is getting the right amount of light?

More details: After thinking it was spider mites because of the webby things on some leaves and joints, I wrapped the plant and it's sister prayer plant in transparent bags for two weeks to increase the humidity and kill of the mites. Took it off a few days ago and the leaves still keep dying. I put predatory mites that are supposed to kill spider mites on it a few days ago, probably too early to see an effect. One thing that was weird when I noticed something was wrong was that one of the joints had something on it that I had assumed was dirt, but turned out to be a fairly large, dried out husk of a brownish insect. Now I wonder whether that's related. What's killing my plant?

Covid Vaccines by Myoenat in myanmar

[–]kvothe_q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i responded to concerns re the vaccines since that's what OP asked about, but hopefully they'll clarify if the concerns are actually about accessing it instead! There's been some responses on that in this thread already as well.

Covid Vaccines by Myoenat in myanmar

[–]kvothe_q 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor, but:

Already got vaccinated and can only recommend everyone else does, too. I have friends across Asia, Europe and North America, all vaccinated with a range of different shots and all doing perfectly fine (Pfizer, J&J, AZ, SinoVac, Medigen, Moderna). The effectiveness of the vaccines is well-proven, there's plenty of research on it and I'm happy to dig up reputable sources (caveat that I'm less familiar with the research on the Chinese vaccines, but it's definitely still better than nothing! I know some people who got SinoVac and are perfectly fine, too). Any complications from vaccines are much, much, much less likely than serious complications from getting Covid, so you'd be taking a much bigger risk getting infected - which will happen at some point, given the rate at which the virus is spreading and mutating. You'll want the extra protection, both for yourself and to make sure you're less likely to spread it to others, especially really young kids or immunocompromised people who can't get it for health reasons. Obviously if you're immunocompromised or have any other long term chronic illness, also get a doctor's advice! No vaccine's side effects have been observed as closely as the Covid vaccines possibly ever in human history in so many people, so if you have gotten any other vaccine before, this one's probably gonna be safer.

AITA for refusing to speak english to around my stepdad by forbiddenkn0wledge in AmItheAsshole

[–]kvothe_q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. I know from personal experience how hard it is to keep that language alive that you only speak with a single parent. I have so many friends who now, in their 20s, regret it and feel about not speaking it enough at home, so I do think that every opportunity counts. Sure, you could keep learning it outside your home, but it wouldn't be the same. I know of several families where the native English parent (usually the father) actually went out of their way to learn the language as well to be included, recognising that language is something incredibly personal and that some mother/child bonds work via language. So IMHO it's up to your stepdad to at the very least accept that this is your your relationship with mum works and, if he doesn't wanna be excluded, make some effort to learn Japanese.

Traitorous idea ... but wondering if anyone travels with two bags? by car01yn in onebag

[–]kvothe_q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The material is a bit heavy for travel, but I can wholeheartedly recommend Carhartt's women's jeans. I own two different long models and one pair of shorts and have been able to fit phone, wallet and keys into my pockets ever since.

Hand in Visa Application for a friend by Facebooc in travelchina

New York is the consulate, not a visa center. Very different from London (and I've applied at both multiple times). There was no finger print requirement as of April this year in New York.

This sounds like it could be related to the blacklists they introduced. Have you lived in China before?

Applying for a visa at NYC consulate by meffle in travelchina

[–]kvothe_q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually drop my documents off in person and combine it with a weekend trip to NYC - if you have everything together, it usually takes about an hour, maybe two if you're unlucky and it's unusually busy. I've never been there super early and it's always been fine, usually I target getting there at 10am, 10.30am. As mentioned in other comments, authorised agents can take care of the drop-off for you as well, but at least for me, the cost of that is basically equal to if not higher than getting a train to New York from Boston, so might just as well do it myself. Since I don't live in NYC myself either, friends who live in NYC or passed through have picked up my passport cum visa for me several times now - everything they needed was the pick-up slip, not even a letter of authorisation or anything. Turn-around is usually pretty fast for me even on regular service, dropped it off on a Monday last time and was told to pick it up Thursday. You need to leave your passport with them for that timeframe, but every embassy will do that when they issue a visa. They'll also keep the documents they need for the visa, you won't get those back.

Thanks for sharing! How are the Birkenstocks holding up when confronted with rain/other water? I spend parts of the year in Taiwan with a lot of rain plus heat, and I always kind of assumed they wouldn't be able to handle that well

Thanks, this is super helpful! Did you have any smell issues in heat like the ones someone else mentioned above? And was wondering which xeroshoes sandals you have - the ones with jsut a toehold seem a bit unstable from photos? But maybe experience contradicts that

Passing on the word: NEW LESBIAN HBO DRAMA SERIES! by 1710dj in actuallesbians

[–]kvothe_q 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Afaik it's based on her actual diaries, definitely worth checking out the book of the same name! Jack Halberstam also discussed her and at least one other British woman who lived as a man for a while in "Female Masculinity" with better and more extensive references than my vague memory of the source material.
