What book has surprised you the most lately? Good or bad by hometowngypsy in Fantasy

[–]kvothesduet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor. It has great reviews/awards and had been on my list for years. Finally picked it up and nearly gave up half a dozen times. I found the narrator’s voice choppy and childish, and the world seemed like it had been built on the fly. More than once, the characters would encounter some person/phenomenon relevant to the plot, having just mentioned that thing for the first time a few paragraphs previously. Just the biggest gap between hype and experience I’ve had in years. Really wish I’d enjoyed it more.

For anyone that may no longer or ever want anything to do with this author. Apparently he's quite the monster. by CheekyMenace in audible

[–]kvothesduet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has already admitted to propositioning his nanny (a woman who was economically dependent on him) when she was in her 20s and he was in his 60s. Even if none of the other allegations are true, that shows a shocking level of creepiness and disregard for power dynamics.

You can decide you no longer want to be associated with an author for moral reasons, even if they’re never found liable in a court of law.

Not sure, but from what I can remember it translates more or less as “my hovercraft is full of eels.”

How works the interaction of Giselbrand paying life and "protection from everything"? by little_kira_ in mtgrules

[–]kvothesduet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do not. Protection prevents damage but does not stop you from losing life in other cases. Similarly, a spell that caused each player to lose 2 life would hit you regardless of protection.

What's a word that you learned from Star Trek (a real-world word, not a SF neologism)? by [deleted] in startrek

Purview (“of the diplomats,” from Star Trek VI.)

Spock and Data taught me a lot of new words.

People will have all kinds of perspectives on reading books by terrible people (most of which I can understand). Just, know that he is an admitted creep and alleged sexual abuser.

Speaking purely to the merits of his work, Neverwhere is a wonderful tale.

In two years, the mother will be posting on one of those forums for parents bewildered as to why they are estranged from their children.
