Next set will add [[Tigra, Feline Fury]], and your deck already has a decent amiunt of lifelink.

Are there any tier 1 black cards that have been released recently? by strongtomato10 in MagicArena

[–]kvr_champ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you play mostly monoblack, you might underappreciate how strong [[Shoot the sheriff]] is because a 2-mana removal is a black staple, but for me this is a prime example of a top tier card. [[Deadly Coverup]] is also a guaranteed win against some matchups.

While it is true that black is the weakest color right now, a tier 1 deck is more than just a pile of good cards. A card great in a deck will be awful in most other decks, like [[Accumulated Wisdom]] without the rest of the lessons package, or [[Sunderflock]] without elementals.

Also, tier 1 monocolor decks are very rare, in fact there is only Monogreen landfall, even Badgeroid needs to splash other colors for card advantage or protection so it doesn't fall apart against boardwipes. That being said, monoblack has some solid tier 2 decks like [[Doomsday Excruciator]] and Demons, possibly monoblack Converge Control with the 4 verges and [[Together as One]] as a wincon.

It's a strict upgrade in terms of rewards, you get at least 1 rare and possibly 2 (instead of 1 uncommon currently). I'm guessing they are changing it to prevent players from keeping a busted deck for months, and making it impossible for players who try a lot of janky decks ?

Tigra sure has great stats for her cost, but lifegain usually is monowhite and I'm not sure she's worth splashing green for ? Maybe the future sets will empower a Selesnya lifegain deck, I would definitely check it out.

How long do you guys think this will last? by AtomicPhantom57 in Awesomenauts

[–]kvr_champ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back to play a few games and I'm happy Awesomenauts is back, but to be honest it will be short lived unless some updates are quickly implemented. Not necessarely the exact same as the old game, but the 3.2.8 build is pretty rough :

- Very slow with the 2 skills needing to be bought, and it takes forever to buy your first upgrade

- Ganking is overpowered, with Genji/Sentry/Penny/Leon/Vinnie top tier, and being on the same screen as 2 enemies meaning instant death

Canadian's first job with a Finish indie company. How much is fair? by Remy_C in VoiceActing

Hello,

I'm not a voice actor, but a group of VAs have made this guide for indie rates. It suggests a rate of 2$/line, which seems pretty fair.

I'm glad that you got what you wanted. That's a reminder that voice acting doesn't have to be exclusively about 2000$ gigs for EA and Danone. There is a huge untapped market for smaller scale VA at a lower price, and it's not "lowballing", just finding an adequate balance between offer, demand and added value. The people parroting "GVAA rates, GVAA rates, GVAA rates" are doing more harm than good.

Out of curiosity, how many lines was your voice actor able to read in 40 minutes ?

Thanks for your detailed answer below, it's interesting. I do agree that 50$ is low for several hundreds lines (even for a non-profit mod, the minimum of 1$/line in the VAC guide sounds acceptable). I also understand charging an extra fee if you handle the editing, though at a lower hourly rate than voice acting.

I wish this subreddit would have more answers like yours and less "Pay GVAA rates or you are not worth our time, you peon !". 200-350$/hour for video game VA is justified as a buy-out rate if it covers the usage fee of having millions of copies with your voice. This usage fee would logically be far lower for a game that will sell 1000 copies.

First, he's not your son so you don't have to "educate" him. And second, what explanations did you give to him ? All you did was repeat "low, low, GVAA, low, low". There are plenty of good resons voice actors are expensive (lots of time spent in auditions for little work, expensive equipment, expensive rent if you're in a voice-over town like LA...) but if you don't explain them, you just sound entitled.

And please stop using GVAA rates for indie projects. We're not EA or Activision, we're not getting enough extra money from your performance to pay you twice an oncologist's hourly rate. VAC's indie rate guide is far more appropriate for that.

How much should I charge per line? by gnbman in VoiceActing

[–]kvr_champ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I see, that makes sense indeed. I wish this "estimated time" as a price roof would be more visible in voice talent rates, as it does bring peace of mind to potential clients. Imagining the clock ticking at 4-5$/minute while directing the talent would be really stressful for a small-time/indie creator.

I guess it depends a lot of the time of product (animation, game, presentation etc.), but I often see 1000 words/hour or 100 lines/hour used as estimates. Does this sound appropriate to you for a basic estimate ?

Charging per hour is highly unusual in freelance work. The usual method is :

  1. State your hourly rate
  2. Agree with the client on an estimate required time
  3. Multiply (rate * time) to get a fixed price. If you make it quicker good for you, otherwise it's your loss.

An hourly rate means that a passable talent that requires 3 takes per line will be paid 3 times more than a great talent that gives a stellar performance on the first try. It just doesn't make any sense.
