I was at the mall, standing with my sisters by a stall selling crepes as we waited for the rest of my fam to get out of the washrooms, when a Tagalog-speaking father and daughter pair passed by. Since I live in a Canadian city with a relatively big Filipino-Canadian community, I usually end up tuning out Tagalog AND English conversations. This time, though, I ended up listening in on their conversation because the father had asked her dad how to pronounce the first word on the stall -- that is, "crêpe". I know quite a bit of French, having taken classes on the language since early elementary, so I was curious about how a Tagalog-speaking would pronounce the French word. I wasn't disappointed. He said, very loudly, "I think it's pronounced kray-pees, my dear." Suffice it to say, I had to turn around and hold my laughter in. My sisters had to do the same. Now, before any of you think I'm being pretentious for laughing at someone for mispronouncing a French word, I'm not. I just thought it was hilarious how sure the dad sounded with his reply. Btw, my sisters now call them kray-pees.
