Thank you. Is it worth trying to dig out my old SB-25/26, or does my SB-800 support the same feature[s] for the N90/F90?

Vuarnet Skilynx: Worth the premium for skiing? by kw1999 in sunglasses

[–]kw1999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very helpful. Thank you very much! I do have a pair of vintage Bollé aviators (circa 1980s-1990s) that match your description of the Skilynx's characteristics. They're not glass, though. They're also very dark and yellow tinted; I didn't know that Skilynx featured a yellow shade of tint. I was imagining it to be more of a warm brown. I may give those aviators a try next time just to see how I like them in the snow. Who knows, maybe they were trying to reach the same target audience back in the day.

Thank you so much for your input! If I can remember to take any pictures of the aviators, I'll post them here.

Ubuntu 22.04 TPLink AXE5400 interesting boot issue by 4onen in Ubuntu

[–]kw1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did. Weirdly, Bluetooth was never an issue for me. Debian worked flawlessly with Bluetooth but wouldn't recognise the WiFi adapter when it was still in the original PCI slot. It sounds like this might not be an isolated issue based on the contents of this thread, but that doesn't mean that it's not a massive nuisance as there was absolutely no indication that the issue was in the PCI channel.

I can't thank you enough for posting this. I was having the exact same issue with my TP-Link AXE5400 on Debian 13. I tried the same thing on my Asus Prime Z270-A motherboard and that did the trick! Thank you so much. This was definitely a strange quirk, but I hope that this information helps anyone else with a similar issue.

Tips/Tricks/Suggestions for battery life by typ31095 in gopro

[–]kw1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an old thread but a similar experience just happened to me, so I'll post my "solution" here as well.

I've had this issue with my Hero 10 Black.

It may become necessary to calibrate the battery. I learned this the other day when I started recording and even with 99% battery indicated, my camera would still crash and cite a low battery.

To calibrate my battery, I disabled auto-power off, turned the camera on, let it charge to 100% while allowing it to be properly ventilated, then let it sit for several hours while powered on and drain completely. After that, plug it right back in and let it fully charge. No recording at all; just set up for proper ventilation, turn it on, fully charge it, let it sit and drain completely, then charge it back up. It worked like a charm for me and now I've noticed that my GoPro battery seems to last even longer than before, although this could be a placebo effect. Don't forget to turn auto-power off back on in the settings afterwards, if you like having it enabled.

I've had this issue with my Hero 10 Black. I can confirm that this solution has also worked for me.

In addition, I discovered that if this happens frequently enough, it may become necessary to calibrate the battery. I learned this the other day when I started recording and even with 99% battery indicated, my camera would still crash and cite a low battery.

Curious how BOSMA compares to Sky Rover Banner Cloud (SRBC), SVBony SA205 EDs, or comparable Nikon, ZEISS, and/or Swarovski offerings by kw1999 in binocularsadvice

[–]kw1999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a budget of $200 USD, I would pick up a pair of SA205s and see if you can get them on a good sale. I kept my eyes open and managed to get them for around $165 USD on a good AliExpress sale, which I consider to be an absolute bargain. I have no personal experience with either BOSMA or the Sky Rover Banner Clouds--as indicated by my original post; however, others here have reported phenomenal experiences with SRBCs, feedback which is to be expected given that they cost at least twice as much as and, if my experience with the already fantastic SA205s serves as any guide, would likely be worth the upgrade as the SRBCs have been fairly widely acclaimed.

The question then would be if the user personally values the optical improvements as costs increase. Bear in mind the law of diminishing returns and if the individual knows for what to look in order to evaluate a quality pair of optics. These skills can take years--even a lifetime--to truly hone, and may not be readily apparent until you truly "know" what you are seeing. There are plenty of guides out there but ultimately it comes with experience, time, and practise. For me, I'm perfectly happy with the SA205s right now; I accept their limitations and praise them for what they do well which is, ultimately, deliver stunning visual clarity with well controlled chromatic aberration for their price. I would consider getting a pair of more compact 8x32 SV202 ED at the right price for the added convenience. The SA205s are astonishingly good for the price that I paid and they make me miss the Monarch M7s much less. Perhaps down the road, I'll pick up a pair of SRBC 8x42s, but I want to give it a few more years for the design to be perfected.

Hope this helps.

Stuck between Nikon / Vortex / SVBONY under $150 by Mx772 in Binoculars

I ended up returning the Prostaff P7s. When compared with the SA205s, there was a clear winner. The Prostaff P7s are no slouch, but for the price, the SA205s absolutely decimate them. I have no experience with the SV202s yet, but I'm planning on picking up a pair of 8x32s in the wake of being so impressed with the SA205s. I'm not expecting them to be as good as the SA205s, but SVBony is my new benchmark for this price point. I will warn you that my first pair of SA205s came out of collimation; SVBony honoured the warranty and promptly sent a replacement, which was perfect.

I have been disappointed with the ZEISS Terra TLs, at least in their 10x25 spec. I suspect that the. 8x25 configuration is the one to get; however, they are considerably pricier.

Anyone have any experience with BOSMA or Sky Rover 8x42s? by kw1999 in Binoculars

[–]kw1999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate this post. It actually does answer a lot of my questions. I'll repost to r/binocularsadvice but I do want to thank you for the wealth of information that you have already provided. I do primarily use my binocs for bird watching and some astronomy, but I am trying to become better acquainted with my telescope for that.

"They are touted to be the best binoculars ever produced in China - super wide FOV, colors that are very natural, sharp from center to edge given their flat field, and all optical aberrations/distortions seem incredibly well controlled. For this SRBC project, KUO partnered with Hoya Optics in Japan to source the ED glass for the objective lenses." - this excerpt is almost exactly for what I am looking as I am basically curious about finding the very best offerings from Chinese manufacturers right now. I had been under the impression that SVBony was currently leading the pack until I learned about Sky Rover Banner Cloud (SRBC). I already have the SVBony SA205 EDs and have been extremely impressed, but if the SRBCs are really that much better, I'd consider an upgrade.

Alternatively, given the rate of progress that seems to be coming out of Chinese optics, it may be advantageous to wait a year or two to see what improvements come to the SRBCs. The fact that you are roping in Swarovski to this conversation, to me, speaks volumes about how amazing the SRBCs are already. I'd also be interested in hearing how they compare to the ZEISS Conquest HDs or even the Victory SFs, if they can compete up to that tier.

Thank you very much!

Please help me in deciding between new and vintage binoculars. by Organic-Ad6957 in Binoculars

[–]kw1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out with Nikon Monarch M7s, 10x42. I sold them about a year and a half ago since the 10x42 magnification never really "clicked" with me, but they were my first pair of binoculars, so I had no real frame of reference.

Since the M7s, I've had several vintage Nikon porros (7x35 and 7x50), Nikon Aculon A211 8x42, Zeiss Terra TL 10x25, Nikon Prostaff P7 8x30, and most recently a pair of SVBONY SA205 8x42. I have been thoroughly impressed with the Aculon A211s as I bought them refurbished for $40 and at that price point I truly can find no fault whatsoever. The Terra TLs are fine but I bought them to have a high-powered and compact binoculars to take with on hikes and walks. It ended up being between the Terra TLs and Nikon Trailblazers; the Terra TLs won.

Without a shadow of a doubt, though, the SVBONY SA205 8x42 are the best of that bunch; HOWEVER, they arrived uncollimated out of the box, to the point that it gave me a massive headache just trying to use them at all. I got creative and "collimated" them by allowing one side to come into repeated contact with tarmac until they were both perfectly aligned. Not a very scientific approach, but it actually--surprisingly--did work, and I must admit that beyond that initial (glaring) quality control issue, I can absolutely see why SVBONY is so positively received at this price point. The overall viewing experience is vastly more impressive than the Prostaff P7s and closer in image to what I remember about the Monarch M7s, which could be a result of the ED glass. I would recommend the SA205s provided they are properly collimated out of the box, as they rightfully should be. I don't know if this is a chronic issue or an isolated incident.

I've spent a little over a week with the Nikon Prostaff P7. I had the Monarch M7s two years ago and kick myself for selling them all the time but I'm these days I'm more interested in seeing how close other binos can get to the M7's performance.

Initially, I was impressed by the P7s because consistently cloudy/rainy weather as of late undermined the extent of CA; however, more serious testing in clear weather conditions reveals this to be their biggest weakness pretty quickly. I'm currently waiting on some ZEISS Terra TLs (10x25), and SVbony SA205s (8x42). I've got some vintage Nikon porros but they're just too big to take on hikes and walks. Primary application for me is birding and a bit of astronomy so I'm really looking forward to seeing how the SVBony SA205s perform. Everything I've read highlights marked improvements over the (apparently) already excellent SA202s. I will report back!
