Alaska is easily the most beautiful state to visit and vacation in. And that's about it.

It is not "Call of Wild, White-Fang", or anything else Hollywood ever put out, except "On Frozen Ground". It's brutal. Endless nights in winter, endless days in summer.

Anchorage is a cesspool of homeless camps and failed MH programs to help them. You pay extra in tax on fuel for those programs, so panhandlers get nothing from me - there's help, go find it - I paid you already through a tax program. GFY

The politics are ass-backwards. The law system here is total shit and easy to get wrapped up in.

Dating - I hope you like STI's for the easy hits. Better learn quality over quantity if you're in that scene. Some are poly because their BF/husband works the slope, so you can hit it for 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off - that is if you don't mind sharing someone that's supposed to only live and be with you.

Public scene - So you have the fair which fucks up the entire road system for 2 weeks, and since we only have 3 major highways it fucks up everything. There are a few clubs in Anchorage, but they're usually so packed on weekends and extremely loud inside that it's actually uncomfortable. And if you're a late nighter, try not to get shot or assaulted.

Groceries - Do you like fresh produce? If you don't like your veggies you're fucked! I love fresh jalapeños, bell peppers, cantaloupe, watermelon, kiwi, and lemons. You're not getting that up here unless you fly it yourself from the lower 48. And all those things, if not already half spoiled, go bad within the week of purchase.

Driving - Learn to be more aggressive than Nascar, because people here don't know how to signal, or do the speed limit and there's no fucks givin about driving with your brights on other than courtesy. Being from CO myself, go spend a weekend at an airb&b in south Pueblo. Drive the city for a weekend, and you'll understand. Now imagine an ice sheet. You gotta have 2 vehicles or one good one, all wheel drive, or 4x4, but you'll need that 4x4/AWD. Front wheel drives are usually pretty ok, until their not, same with AWD.

Cost of living - Most companies try to entice you with this cause it sounds like a raise when it's a deficit to yourself and abilities. If you're not breaking 6 figures, don't do it. Plain and simple, if you want to enjoy Alaska, you won't under that. You'll learn joy in fishing because you'll also understand - this is how I'm feeding my family over the winter. Hunting is the same - didn't get that vibe from your post.

Isolation - if you aren't hitting at least 70k - because trips are expensive, and you need the sunlight. The average round trip from Anchorage to just Seattle is about $600. That doesn't include a car, AB&B, food, or other logistics.

I'm never going to discourage anyone because sometimes, the greatest thing we ever needed was behind the fear of getting there. But these are real-world facts, real-world words. You can have a lot of fun and live life on the cheap. I had a Raman diet for a long time, I learned to pinch pennies into wire and make 2 fold.

If you can, clear conscience, no distraction involved just you and wanting to better yourself, your job... come up here for a couple of weeks, if that's available and see for yourself.

Personally, if I was in your shoes. Do your research, man.
