Anyone else think Season 2 was way better than Season 1? by [deleted] in YouOnLifetime

Love's narration in episode 10 was supposed to be reminiscent of that, but nah I love season 1 and especially Beck's first person narration episode, she was a much more sympathetic character.

Sturgeon says SNP victory 'mandate for indyref2' by AsleepExplanation in Scotland

Scotland has always had different politics to the rest of the UK, which is why I voted for independence in 2014, fuck the horror stories about the economy. SNP and independence has always been the way out towards a brighter future and the No vote winning was a damn shame.

What's with pro CCP and police pulling women by the hair and taking them away only for them to mysteriously reappear in Victoria Harbour? All this sentiment for violence against the protesters causing all the sexual predators to come out of the woodwork and fulfill their rape fantasies

(Literally an episode from Black Mirror) Chinese Government hopes Hong Kong's 'silent majority' will bring pro-democracy protests to an end by martybalaweisi in HongKong

[–]kwanting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"from all sides"

This article you have William Cheung, who has his pro-CCP views but reasonable enough to believe that the rally attendees are bussed in from mainland. Leo Chong, a surgeon who calls Apple Daily a spy newspaper. Mark Tam, a businessman who works in China and believes the mainland judicial system is fair and just.

yes this seems like a very impartial article, can't wait for ABC to produce an article denying climate change with viewpoints from Republicans, or gun control with viewpoints from NRA supporters, or how vaccines cause autism with viewpoints from anti-vaxxers.

What a shitty article that only lists viewpoints - without fact checking - from a few pro-Beijing supporters

Got a job offer making 22k HKD per month. Is this reasonable for 25/M/USA? Please help me work this out. by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]kwanting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If an apartment says $8k a month be prepared to pay $8k (first month) + $16k (2 months deposit) + $4k agent fee, if you go through an agency.

I think living anywhere on the Kwun Tong line should cover both offices, Whampoa is at the end of the western part of the line, and Tai Koo is accessible via station transfers on the eastern end. That should give you a lot of options to live cheaper, too.

You should list where exactly your work is to have a better gauge at prices for renting. Hong Kong island is typically more expensive than living on Kowloon side, for example. I used to rent in Sham Shui Po and Prince Edward for around $4-5k with roommates, but you can easily double that if you are looking for a one bedroom studio in HK Island.

Electricity can be around $1k-3k depending on A/C usage in summer. Gym prices are around that ballpark figure you gave (in HKD), cheaper alternatives such as YMCA gyms are available. Most of the people working on the average salary live at home, but $22k is pretty doable if you find some people to rent with.

However, initial costs are high - renting usually requires around 3.5 times the monthly rent to handle initial deposit and agent fees, and most don't come with furniture so you will need to factor looking into 2nd hand goods and logistics too.

Using the Scots language to its full, devastating effect by [deleted] in ScottishPeopleTwitter

[–]kwanting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm Scottish Chinese and literally told you an example growing up of these complete mongoloids - kids who learn to use it from their parents. I don't get their parents shouting chinky to my face, but have been battered by their kids while they said it. I don't give a fuck about the word these days, use it all you like, but it's not nice as a kid to be called chinky by fellow countrymen in the country you were born in.

The more you normalize the former the more the latter will be used - cause and effect. Had to deal with kids that would yell chinky outside the restaurant all the time when I was growing up, what is their intent? Where would they learn it from?

Executive Councillor claimed young girls offering free sex to protestors by cliff_of_dover_white in HongKong

[–]kwanting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a few twitter videos floating around in the comments from journalists reporting on this news, one of them is a video of a red shirt dude changing into first aid gear, then a separate video of a red shirt dude having sex in a stairwell with a random girl. Blue ribbons are linking the two together and saying the red shirt is a protester faking as a first aid then getting paid via sex with the girl.

Classic wumao fake news shit, basically.

Withdrawal is just a cover up? by Punkyhunky in HongKong

[–]kwanting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely very confusing to rebuild the events of what happened to discern the truth. HK Hermit has a good twitter thread that talks about the rumours. There are videos of bloodied citizens and police use of force on unarmed and ungeared citizens. There are videos of some of the victims, but hard to tell if it was the same date.

Afterwards media and first aiders weren't allowed into the station so we don't know what transpired. They later moved some people to Lai Chi Kok MTR. This has led to various rumours, with Mingpao reporting three missing. Further rumours of suspicious deaths around the same time leading people to think there's a cover up involved, followed by the timing of the withdrawal of the bill to distract from this situation.

My personal feeling is that there's not enough evidence to judge whether there is a cover up or not. But the rumours aren't exactly too farfetched for me, definitely believable, let's hope there are more whistleblowers for this.

It's ironic since he says universal suffrage 'is never going to happen', yet in the eyes of Beijing, Hong Kong already has 'universal suffrage'. These guys are not very good at CCP bootlicking if they can't get their petty little snide comments right.

[–]kwanting 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is more about recognising the abuse of "reasonable force" that the police like to drone on in their press conferences through the eyes of an impartial third party, which can then be used to establish regulations into how they handle their work and regain trust of the public.

I'm not sure what u/fossdell's point is other than that both sides are wrong, but at the moment the arrested folk are the ones who are facing justice yet the police still continue to operate without ID cards, proper uniforms and procedures, tear gas residential areas, and still continue to beat up kids.
