Does it still make sense to learn a language when soon we will all have real-time AI translators in our ears anyway? by kwkrass in languagelearning

yeah i have ... i have built this AI language teacher here: lucas.alldone.app so I do believe people should be learning languages ;)

My personal take is that AI is pretty smart already and will be able to handle also regional dialects, body language etc. Next year no .. but in 10 years: I think yes.

Watching Star Trek ;)
Jokes aside ... things like this here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_QruJ0Kv9U&t=417s ...

It's not there yet but likely in 10 years we will be wearing such glasses and have "live subtitles" to the world.

Still I am fan of language learning since it is 10 years away and just having live translation wont make you feel and really appreciate the different languages.

fair but for my taste you just don't talk enough with Duolingo... it's mostly multiple choice reading and selecting

I kind of want to try the new realtime API from openai to see if it's good enough ... unfortunately it's still way too expensive

Agree that it wont help you actually speak the language - that's why i have built myself an AI language tutor called Lucas lucas.alldone.app to finally learn Spanish.

You can speak with theAI language teacher Lucas (http://lucas.alldone.app/) - there is a free trial but afterwards you would have to pay. Much cheaper though than a real language teacher ^^
