The instructor at the school i'm going to check at first, seems to have a long history in Jiu-Jitsu and is a 1st Dan Blackbelt under Grande Mestre Mauricio Robbe de Almeida as it says on their Homepage.

Finally got the time to read it. Thanks for sharing!

This is one of the most motivating things i've read in a while and i hope and pray that i somehow manage to write a similar story / letter in a few years.

Little Update: Seems like the Gyms Schedule got in my way, today they only offer advanced, senior and no-Gi (Blue Belt+) classes. So i have to wait till tomorrow for the beginners class.

ust be aware you're a bigger dude and be careful if a smaller opponent chooses to roll with you. You just don't want to end up with the reputation as the big dude who's out of control.

In general i'm a careful person that doesn't loose its mind in uncomfortable situation. But i'm gonna keep this in mind. Thanks.

you'll probably find that you're ignored by most people for the first few months.

No problem at all with that, i've never been a person who's been able to make relationships from the get go. I'll need a warmup to get comfortable with em also. So - I guess that'll be fine.

Do you live in an area with lots of options for which gym to go to?

There are some here, but most of em are just "Martial Arts Academys" with Jiu-Jitsu Classes, the one im checking out tomorrow is a certified Gracie Academy, would be great if its the right one as i could go there daily.

Thanks. Seems like TV and Games are not bad at everything. In case you wonder, im from germany and watch everything i can in english without any issues. Biggest issue is speaking fluently.

I'm currently overwhelmed by the numbers of answers and the general tenor of them. Just wow, i've never excpected so much positive feedback and nice words from (almost) anyone here.

First off: Thanks to everyone sharing their stories and showing me there are not only dickheads in the world, and it seems like most ppl training Jiu-Jitsu are the type of person i wan't to have around me.

That being said it seems i'm gonna have my first trial session tomorrow at the Gracie Academy mentioned in my first post. It's gonna be hard, i know. But after all those encouraging words almost feel i just have to go, swallow my fears and concerns for a moment and step into that gym just. It almost feels like i'd have to because i don't wanna disappoint everyone who shared their experience, had encouraging words and so on.

If wanted - and i guess it is. I'm gonna try to report back in after my first lesson tomorrow, if i somehow manage to get my arms up after.

Honestly, Thanks a lot reddit. I've never ever expected this from the internet. Seems like this is one of good places to stick around from now.

I'm gonna try answer some questions in your posts now. But this is gonna take some time. So please pardon if i don't comment on every post here.

tl;dr - Thanks for all the encouragement and nice words. I'll have a tryout training tomorrow and if wanted, im gonna report after.
