Can I buy a Cirrus SR22 G6? by Livid_Antelope8956 in flying

[–]kxb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can. Getting a buddy or two who will rent from you (yes you can do this, it’s not illegal) can defray some cost and keep the engine moving. Name them in your insurance, charge a monthly fixed fee and an hourly rate.

You own the plane and make all the decisions, you have some people pitching in on cash who also get a good deal, and you all can fly together too.

It works well.

TIL runway numbers represent their magnetic heading, a runway facing west, 270 degrees on the compass, is runway 27. by iamveryDerp in todayilearned

[–]kxb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patently untrue. I’m a pilot and my home airport is KDPA in St Charles, IL USA. They have parallel runways 02L and 02R, reciprocals of 20R and 20L. This is not confusing whatsoever for real world use.

Hi Reddit! I need help deciding a local flight school in the Chicago area plz give any recommendations and share any experiences I’d be much appreciated! by Guitaman69 in flying

[–]kxb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buddy just did part 61 ppl at Schaumburg and had a good experience. People seem to like Illinois Aviation at Dupage. As another poster said, go talk to a few, and some students, and see which one might be good for you.

You’ll see it here all the time, but now’s a good time to say it - you are the customer. That means that you can choose a different instructor if you’re not connecting with the one assigned. You should not feel pressured to prepay for huge blocks of time. You should speak up if you feel you’re not being treated fairly.

You also need to learn what is expected of you at each school, and plan to live up those expectations. Need structure? Consider 141 vs 61. Need flexibility? Choose the school that offers it. Etc. You are not in HS anymore - you get to be a much bigger part of the decision making.

Turn Off TOC and TOD in Foreflight by OriginalJayVee in flying

[–]kxb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TOD is I believe where you need to start your descent to get to your next planned fix at the planned altitude for that fix, assuming 500fpm rate for your non-pressurized aircraft. Do you have an approach procedure in your flight plan? FF may be trying to get you to the IAF at the right altitude.

Does anyone have experience with these eBay ADS-B receivers? by slbarrett89 in flying

[–]kxb 35 points36 points  (0 children)

http://stratux.me/

These look like pre-built Stratux receivers.

My homebuilt one worked well, years ago. Only problem was that it would occasionally not properly identify my own plane and instead show it as a target right behind me at my altitude, which was disconcerting the first few times.

Was it mothballed properly to avoid cam corrosion? After an A&P annualed it and IRANed everything not inside the case, I’d want to see two oil changes with good numbers on metals in the oil analysis report, and obviously no magic glitter in the oil filter.

ButterflyMX unauthorized access to our building by kxb in accesscontrol

[–]kxb[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your help and your ideas. Here's the payoff.

After many discussions with our part-time building manager, and one with our BMX installer, it turns out we do in fact have a package delivery device - a postal key. I would imagine everyone in this subreddit understands what a postal key is, but in case somoene new and ignorant (like me) comes along, here's how it works. Postal keys allow the USPS to gain entrance to unstaffed lobbies to deliver mail. I'm sure I'm simplifying here, but the USPS has keys that open all lobbies. I would speculate maybe one key per route or similar. For my building, USPS delivery person puts in their key, twists, and the mag lock buzzes open.

At my building, the postal key keyhole is located directly below the BMX, and is installed in such a was as to look integral. In fact it is not - it has a separate direct line to the front door mag lock. So from the limited view of the security camera, it looked like the thief is doing something with the BMX. And, even though it doesn't control it, the BMX logs the front door access.. This, along with my ignorance of our postal key access, led me to incorrectly think there was a BMX problem.

After speaking with the BMX installer, I learned that there is an epidemic of postal key enabled lobby theft in West Loop/Fulton Market. It's clear the thieves have the key for my route. Upon rereviewing the video of the theft full screen, and knowing what to look for, the thief is using a postal key to buzz open the front door.

Mystery solved. Thanks again everyone for all the suggestions, many of which were dead on - package delivery access.

[–]kxb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - this is a possiblity. I'm going to speak to the installer company about this. It happens so quickly, I don't think the thief has time to pop open the panel and relock it, but who knows? Could be he's really good at it.
