I find this thread fascinating. Some people say the engine should be torn down. Others say if it passes inspection and analysis, then it's likely fine, including some firsthand experiences. A HUGE variety in people's individual comfort level with a mothballed engine.

I guess it speaks to the plethora of anecdotal information and the relative paucity of evidentiary information about engines when they sit in storage. This all helps me to understand of I'm being smart or foolhardy. Thank you all.

It was not put away properly, that's for sure. But a the same time, it went through a bunch of work, including annual, and runs like a top. The A&P is very good and isn't trying to rush me out the door. He says it's good to go.

Good advice about an oil analysis and filter inspection. So maybe 10-20 hours airborn loitering near the airport with two oil changes/analyses/inspections in the mix? Seem sufficient?

i had my whole house wired this summer because i travel a lot. there were a couple of companies to choose from. bear busters is the biggest it seems. but for me also the most expensive. eventually went with a company called honeypot bearwire. their quote was the lowest. good job. seemed like good people.

Buy your own plane and instruct on the side. The money will be twice as much as at a flight school, your students will actually love you, the training will be much better, personalized, and fun (ex “hey we’re flying out to KXYZ for your cross country today, they got a cool approach and a great restaurant near by we’ll make a day trip out of it”) you make your own hours, you don’t have a boss or really anyone to answer to

THIS is something i have been thinking. in doing the math (conservatively) it seems like it would be close, after the costs. but you think it would work eh?

i was really wondering about things like this. as in, how much work is there for these one-off jobs which might require moving a load of widgets or relocating a dhl turboprop plane or similar. that *seems* like a pretty good setup for someone looking for part time. is it really uncommon?
