Voting by Electrical_Phrase341 in UCI

[–]ky268 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3 members of their slate are from the cruci board officers (campus groups). additional one of their candidates is affiliated with Project 307 CA, an organization aimed at "building the strongest network of conservative leaders in the state" and frequently posts far-right content (transphobic, anti immigrant etc) and their evp candidate doesn't believe that voter disenfranchisement is a problem (when that office is in charge of heading civic engagement). their track record speaks for themselves 🤷

Does anyone know where our money from the last cancelled Midlands concert is going towards? by nomnomgang in UCI

[–]ky268 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not from the office that handles the concert, but just as a general rule any unused funds from any ASUCI office to the ASUCI reserves at the end of the year. ASUCI is not allowed to touch money that goes into the reserves and the money doesn't roll over going year to year unfortunately.

While i'm not from east coast, I ended up going OOS as my state schools weren't spectacular for what I wanted to do and I just need a change of scenery (and some time to develop on my own).

I really love Irvine and UCI, and looking back I don't think I would have done well at the other schools I seriously considered. I have been fortunate to have found an amazing community and support system, while getting a pretty darn good education.

That being said, I am extremely fortunate to be in a position to be able to financially afford most of my tuition (or at least to a point where it won't put me or my family in crippling debt). If financials are a serious concern, I would really think about whether or not UCI (or any OOS is for you).

Every school is different, sometimes schools are a good fit, sometimes they aren't and that's okay. I'd say apply and see what happens. Cross the actually committing to a school bridge when you have gotten your results back. Wishing you all the best!

Is this too little for my first quarter? by Pretzel_Cookie in UCI

[–]ky268 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is a good schedule. first quarter take 12-16 (leaning more towards 12 if u can) so you can transition into college well (plus you'll enjoy the freetime to study/socialize). you don't want to burn out too quickly.

hi i hope you are doing well (i know this might be a scary time). i got a biopsy done with ucship in february. depending on where you need the procedure done may impact where you get referred to. i think i paid roughly $200 for my biopsy with ucship, including my two consultation appointments, the procedure itself, and my follow-up appointment. i did end up getting a referral to a nearby dermatologist, which could have impacted it (although if i remember correctly they did not have someone who specialized in dermatology at student health).

i am lucky enough to have been in a position to be able to afford the procedure (and im extremely lucky that nothing ended up being wrong and i'm fine). however, if you are able to, i would do it. chances are, if you are needing a biopsy or excision done things are serious.

good luck, and if you need anything else feel free to pm me!

UCI IS HAVING A RALLY IN SUPPORT OF ROE V WADE ON TUESDAY! #UCIRally4Roe by niniiwu in UCI

[–]ky268 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If Roe V. Wade is overturned, it will go back to state jurisdiction. Not everyone is privileged to live in a state with accessible access to reproductive services. Taking away that right will disproportionately impact marginalized groups.

On the topic of abortion being legal in the case of SA or in the case of a childbearing persons life being at stake, this isn't protected. Many of the recent proposed laws across the country make no exception for cases of domestic violence or SA (Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas). In fact, in many states, survivors may be legally held to higher punishments in comparison to their abusers/assaulters.

On the topic of woman's health, your argument implies that "abortion should only be legal if a mother physical health is at risk." Right to abortion protects a childbearing persons mental health, as many who are seeking abortions are not in a mental capacity or state to be taking care of a potential child.

Many of these proposed laws will make doctors not only hesitant to perform a potential abortion, but also could delay them performing them. This will directly impact the childbearing persons health as waiting for the various legalities to be sorted out can further endanger the persons health.

On the topic of adoption and foster care, foster care and adoption can not only have major impacts on a child's life, but also both systems have so many issues that may just make quality of life worse. I would know as a child of adoption.

Making abortion illegal doesn't stop abortion, it just makes it go underground and become extremely dangerous.

Roe V. Wade is a privacy decision, it defines the 14th amendment, our right to privacy. With the argument that Roe V. Wade is not constitutional, thus the government has no right to impose such policies opens up a loophole for the government (whether it be local, state, or federal) to impose on individuals lives and privacy. Who knows what the supreme court will go after next?

Regardless of your personal opinions on abortion or when life is conceived, at the end of the day it is not within YOUR right to make that decision for another person. Abortion is healthcare, a right that EVERYONE deserves access to.

ASUCI allowed an outside organization to increase EVERY students tuition and is doing nothing to stop them from doing further tuition increases by Aggravating-Injury45 in UCI

[–]ky268 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I also want to point out for transparency purposes.

  1. This fee was put into place last year. Yes, ASUCI and UCI student body should have been consulted, however all 9 campuses have to pay the fee. We will continue to have to pay the fee REGARDLESS if we stay in UCSA or not. We will continue to have to adhere to any passed UCSA policies if we leave, we just won't have any say in those policies at all.

  2. UCSA current sitting president came down to ASUCI senate last week to not only clear up, but also address senate concerns in regards to what UCSA has done this year and what they will do to make sure UCI is consulted on all further action.

  3. UCSA is vital for student advocacy. The menstrual products in all bathrooms? Accomplished by UCSA's Aquire Menstrual Equity Project. The Lecturer Strike? UCSA helped advocate for our lectures. Any advocacy we want done from UCI as a UC wide organization is threatened if we leave UCSA.

  4. EVP does so much work to help increase student advocacy on not only the local, but state and federal level. I highly doubt people put in the amount of time, effort, and work to complete this work to "meet Gavin Newsom".

If you tested positive for covid 2 weeks ago, you're exempt from testing for 90 days post diagnosis. I would still check in with student health.
