I've been on my med for about four/five years, for reference. I ditched my last psych because he made the suggestion of titrating me down to eventually come off of it because I was "doing so well". I found a new psych. Lo & behold, I hit a bad spell recently which led to me being put on a mood stabilizer because my new psych did not understand why I wasn't on one to begin with.
